U.S. Open Sectional Has FSGA Feel

May 22, 2012

The field is now set for U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying at Black Diamond Ranch on Monday, June 4.  The participants will play 36 holes on the esteemed Quarry Course in hopes of grabbing one of the qualifying spots for the Championship in June.  The 58-man field is comprised of 36 professionals and 22 amateurs, many of whom are veterans of FSGA and FJT competitions.

Among the U.S. Open hopefuls are four past Florida State Amateur Champions - Blayne Barber (2009), Jeff Dennis (2006), Brad Quiri (2004), and Ty Harris (2002).  Another past FSGA Champion in the field is David Johnson of Melbourne who won the 2009 FSGA Amateur Match Play Championship.

The field also boasts two former FSGA Boys' Junior Champions in Blayne Barber (2006, 2008) and Wesley Graham (2004, 2005).  Graham shares the record for lowest round in Florida Junior Tour history with another qualifier Tyson Alexander, as well as now professional Bud Cauley.  There are many other former and current FJT players in the field including Jack Maguire, J.D. Tomlinson, Daniel Jaramillo, Joey Petronio, and Daniel Berger who is making his second straight trip to Sectional Qualifying.  Another player making a second consecutive trip is Tyler Hitchock who along with Alan Morin, share good memories of Black Diamond after top 10 finishes there in last year's Florida Open.  Morin finished alone in 2nd after losing in a playoff to eventual champion Rod Perry while Hitchock finished T-6.

Those players along with a host of others will rely on their FSGA and FJT experience as they try to earn their spot alongside Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy at the Championship in San Francisco.
