Stasi Maintains Perfect Mid-Amateur Record

Ina Kim (pictured below), of Jupiter, began her first FSGA Championship with an impressive three under-par 69 to take the lead after round one.  2015 Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion, Tara Joy-Connelly, lurked close behind with an even par 72. Kim Benedict rounded out the top three heading into the final round with a one over-par score. Three players were tied for fourth after round one at 74 including defending Champion Meghan Stasi. 

Excitement took place in round two when Stasi (pictured right), of Oakland Park, came from behind with a three under-par 69 to tie Ina Kim for the lead. Kim posted a second round 74 and sat tied for first with a 143 (-1) total. Stasi played consistently both rounds carding four birdies each day and entered the play-off with confidence. The duo headed to the 18th hole to battle for the crystal. Ina carded an easy par with Stasi had to make a tough four-foot putt to keep the play-off alive. With two pars, Stasi and Kim headed back to the 18th tee box for the last time as Stasi drained a 30-foot putt from above the hole to be crowned back-to-back Champion. Stasi has won every Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship she has competed in and stated that this victory is a “Good jump start to the summer to get the game in check."

Meghan’s next event is the U.S. Women’s Four-Ball followed by a qualifier for the U.S. Women’s Open and an exemption into the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.  Three players, Kim Keyer-Scott, Kimberly Benedict, and Tara Joy-Connelly, tied for third place at 146 (+2).

In the Middle Division, Margaret Ference, of Naples, claimed a wire-to-wire three stroke victory with rounds of 81-78—159. Robin Giordano, of Lake Mary, finished in second place with a 161 total followed by Debbie MookSang and Karen Varner tied for third one stroke behind at 162. Kim Childress, of Orlando, won the Middle First Flight by one stroke with rounds of 85-84—169. The Forward Division was captured by first time FSGA winner Amanda Muscato, of Port Saint Lucie, with a 170 total. The net results saw Karen Varner win with a 140 in the Middle Division, Jenna Butler won the Middle First Flight with a 143 total, and Kathleen Aldridge-Cooper won the Forward Division with a 134 total. The Women's Championship schedule is back in action heading to St. Augustine for the prestigious 88th Women's Amateur Championship June 15-18 hosted by World Golf Village and St. Johns Golf and Country Club.

Championship Format

• 36 holes of individual stroke play
• 84 total competitors
• Three Divisions - Championship, Middle and Forward
• Players must select their division at the time of entry, as long as they meet the eligibility requirements.
• The Overall Champion will be the individual from the Championship Division with the lowest 36-hole total score.

Eligibility

Entry Fee

$160 - Entry fee includes all competitive rounds of golf, tee gift, a player luncheon after the final round on Sunday April 30th, and gift certificate prizes. Late entries will be accepted subject to a $10 late entry fee should the entrant gain acceptance into the field.

Schedule of Events

Saturday, April 29th

• 7:00 - 9:30 AM - Tournament Registration (located near pro-shop)
• 8:00 - 9:57 AM - Round One tee times off #1 & #10 tees

Sunday, April 30th

• 8:00 - Round Two shotgun
• 12:30 - 2:00 PM (approx.)  - Player's Awards Luncheon - Included with entry fee

Entry Priority

Entries will be accepted based upon the order of receipt. Entries received after the competitive field is full or after the close of entries, will be placed on an alternates list. Alternates will be contacted in the order of receipt of entry, if and when, a spot becomes available.

Divisions and Approximate Yardages

Players must select which Division they wish to compete in upon entry. 

• Championship Division - 5,700-5,900 yards approx. (Gross Only)
• Middle Division - 5,300-5,500 yards approx. (Gross & Net)
• Forward Division - 4,800-5,000 yards approx. (Gross & Net)

Suggested Handicap Guidelines

The following should be considered when selecting divisions:

• Championship Division - 10.0 and Under
• Middle Division - 11.0-18.0
• Forward Division - 19.0 and Over

Committee Discretion: The Championship Committee reserves the right to move any player out of the Forward Division if their handicap is significantly lower than the majority of the competitors in that division, and their scoring history does not reflect the need to play from the Forward Division yardage. 

Handicaps

• All valid Florida GHIN Handicap Indexes used will be from the April 15, 2017 revision. 
• Each player must have a valid Florida GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 34.0.
• Players in the Middle and Forward Divisions will play to 100% of their course handicap.

It is the responsibility of any player that maintains a Handicap Index lower than her current Florida GHIN Handicap Index to inform the FSGA for resolution. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.

Flighting

The Championship Division is gross only and will not be flighted.  

The Middle and Forward Divisions will be pre-flighted based on individual handicaps.  

Generally, divisions of more than 14 individuals will be flighted, however the Committee reserves the right to flight based on the number of individuals and/or the range of individual handicaps or scores. 

Breaking Ties

Championship Division - The overall Champion will be the individual with the lowest total score. In the event of a tie for first place, there will be a hole-by-hole sudden death playoff on a hole designated by the Committee to determine the Champion. All other tie breaks will be broken by the USGA scorecard match. The last 9 holes will be considered holes 10-18, the last 6 holes will be holes 13-18, the last 3 holes will be holes 16-18 and the last hole will be hole 18. In the case that players are still tied after the 18th hole, the winner will be determined by lot.

Other Divisions – All ties in each flight of the Middle and Forward Divisions will be broken by the USGA scorecard match. The last 9 holes will be considered holes 10-18, the last 6 holes will be holes 13-18, the last 3 holes will be holes 16-18 and the last hole will be hole 18. In the case that players are still tied after the 18th hole, the winner will be determined by lot.

Middle and Forward Divisions will pay gross first, then net.

Practice Rounds

Practice rounds are available after 12:00 PM on the Saturday and Sunday prior to the Championship.  Practice rounds may be available during the week prior to the Championship. The price for a practice round is $30.00 + tax. Please call (386) 426-5210 to arrange your practice round. The proper place to practice your golf swing is on the driving range, hitting multiple shots on the course is unacceptable. 

Defending Mid-Amateur Champion

Meghan Stasi, of Oakland Park, regained her title as Mid-Amateur Champion with a wire-to-wire victory. Stasi took the early lead after the first round with a one under-par 71. In the final round, she took advantage of the par 5's where she made most of her birdies, and carded a 3 under-par 69 for a 140 two-day tournament total. She was the only player in the field with two under-par rounds. Stasi is now a three-time Mid-Amateur Champion, and has won the event every year she has competed in it.
