Men's Net Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. - Grand Cypress Golf Club hosted tough competition for the seventh consecutive year on the New Course and North/South Course. Three winners were crowned Champions after two impressive rounds of golf.

Under 50 Division 
Kris Vassallo, of Bradenton, earned his first FSGA Championship win in wire-to-wire fashion. A round one 69, with five birdies and a net eagle, earned Vassallo the early lead by one stroke over Mike See. Another net eagle in Vassallo’s second round of 74 secured his victory at one under-par 143. Two strokes back tied for second place finished Shane Fairchild, of Bradenton, and Mike See, of Palm Harbor. Fairchild carded an impressive two net eagles for a round one even par and followed up with a 73 in round two to finish at one over-par 145. Mike See, who posted a day one 70, remained in second place after a round two 75. 

50-64 Division 
The leaderboard was lit by red numbers at the top after round one. Ricardo Gonzalez, of Weston, played strong right out of the gate, carding three gross birdies, two net birdies, and a net eagle to secure the early lead at five under-par 67. Despite his great play in round one, Gonzalez fell to a round two 82 and tied for seventh place finish at 149 with Carlos Lamarche. Robert Shourds, who lingered close behind after a round one 70 played steady in round two to climb up the leaderboard. Shourds, of Palm Harbor, scored four net birdies and two gross birdies to finish round two at one under-par.  A three under-par 141 total earned Shourds his first FSGA Championship win by one stroke. Graham Tomlinson, of Lake Mary, posted two net eagles over two rounds to finish in second place at two under-par 142. 

65 & Over Division 
Ron Bauman and Robb Dillinger tied at the top after round one scores of fiver under-par 67. Dillinger, of Fort Myers, could not hold onto the lead after a round two 74 and finished in third place at three under-par 141. Bauman did not let first place out of sight as he posted seven net birdies in round two to finish with a 73. A four under-par 140 finish secured Bauman’s second Men’s Net victory, by one stroke, after winning the Championship in 2016. John Christensen, of Wesley Chapel, claimed second place, at three under-par 141, after a total of three net eagles over the course of the Championship.

~ New Course & North/South ~

The New Course is Jack Nicklaus’ tribute and homage to the famed Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland. This Scottish links masterpiece is complete with double greens, stone bridges and walls, gorse mounds, burms and pot bunkers as deep as 12 feet. The North-South combination, marked by sharply ledged fairways, tall shaggy mounds and plateau greens perched above water or sand, is a demanding, target-style test. Entries are processed after your 3rd One-Day is complete and a score is posted, first come first serve.

Entry Fee

$150 - Entry fee includes both competitive rounds, cart fees, tee gift, and gift certificate prizes

Late entries will be accepted subject to a $10 late entry fee should the entrant gain acceptance into the field.

Championship Format

  • 36 Holes of Net Individual Stroke Play
  • All players will play to 100% of their lowest index (LI) for the previous 12 months
  • Players must play in their respective age division
  • If there is a tie in any division, a modified USGA score card playoff will be completed using net scores. The tie breaker will be as follows:
    • Final 18 holes
    • Final 9 holes, then final six holes, then final 3 holes and finally the 18th hole score. 
    • If there is still a tie, a coin flip will determine the Champion

    Championship Field Size

    • Maximum of 96 players

    Eligibility

    • Must be a male amateur regular member or higher of the FSGA
    • Must have a valid Florida GHIN handicap no higher than 24.0.
    • Must be 18 years of age or older by the first day of the Championship.
    • Must have played in at least 3 One-Day events in the current 2019 calendar year as of the close of entries, September 11th.
    • Entries will be processed after your 3rd event is complete and a score is registered, first come first serve.

    Entry Priority

    Entries will be accepted based upon the order of receipt. Entries received after the competitive field is full or after the close of entries, will be placed on an alternates list. Alternates will be contacted in the order of receipt of entry, if and when, a spot becomes available.

    Handicaps

    • All players will play to 100% of their lowest index (LI) for the previous 12 months
    • For the purpose of the low index (LI) for the previous 12 months, the September 15, 2019 handicap revision will be included
    • All players must have a valid Florida GHIN Handicap Index no higher than 24.0

    Schedule of Events

    Saturday, September 28th

    • New Course - 8:30 AM - Round One shotgun start
    Sunday, September 29th

    • North/South Course - 8:30 AM - Final Round shotgun start
    • Awards ceremony immediately following the completion of play

    Course Set-up

    • Under 50 Age Division - 6,500 yards approximately 
    • 50-64 Age Division - 6,200 yards approximately 
    • 65 & Over Age Division - 5,800 yards approximately

    **Players must play in their respective age division as of the last day of the Championship**

    **No pairing requests will be honored for this Championship**

    Practice Round and Practice Facility Information

    Practice rounds are available three weeks prior to the Championship. Practice rounds may be played after 12:00 PM on the weekends. The price for a practice round is $35.00 plus tax and if you choose to play 36-holes in one day the rate will be $65.00 plus tax. Please call 407-239-1909 to arrange your practice round. The proper place to practice your golf swing is on the driving range. Hitting multiple shots on any hole on the course is unacceptable.

    Carts

    Carts are included for all competitive rounds and all players MUST ride.  Players are responsible for practice round fees.

    Defending Champions

    Andy Weber claimed the honors in the 50 and under age division, shooting a net 70-72--142. In the 50-64 age division, Michael Volcan posted 71-75 for a 146 total and took home the victory. David Norka claimed the 65 & older title with consecutive rounds of 70-71 for a 141 total.
