Winter Series - Southern Hills Plantation Club

Peake, LaCrosse & Anderson capture wins at Southern Hills Winter Series

Allen Peake / Doug LaCrosse / Christopher Anderson

Thanksgiving came and went, which meant a full field of 96 players teed it up at Southern Hills Plantation Club, in Brooksville, on November 26-27. After the conclusion of both days, only a few players were able to come out victorious and capture a title before the 2018 Winter Series comes to an end at Laurel Oak CC in a few short weeks.

Mid-Amateur

Entering the day with a round one score of 77 and two shots shy of the leader, Christopher Anderson of Maitland, found himself within striking distance and in position to move up the leaderboard in round two. Shooting the low round of the day within his division, and finishing his last 11 holes one under, Anderson was able to overcome the two shot deficit with ease and cruise to victory. With a two day total of 77-75--152 (+8), Anderson finished three ahead of Robbie Sisca 76-79--155 (+11), and went on to win his first Winter Series title. Phillip Westfall, of Riverview, was able to sneak ahead of Craig Meyer in the first flight of the Mid-Amateur division, winning by three shots and coming in with a total of 87-78--165.

Senior

Allen Peake of Macon, GA, was one of only two players in the entire field to put up a red number throughout the two days of competition. With a suburb round one score of 71, Peake found himself at the top of the leaderboard and tied for first with Douglas Jones as they entered round two. With a total of six birdies throughout the two days, Peake played steady golf and finished his back nine strong, making it tough for the field to make up any ground. In the end, Peake finished with a two round total of 71-73--144 (E) and finished four shots ahead of Jones, marking Peake's first Winter Series title. In the Senior first flight, Kevin Macy of Tampa, came out ahead of the pack with a two round total of 86-74--160. Macy had a great back nine of even par in round two, which lead to a three shot victory over Bill Hardaker.

Super-Senior

The leaderboard was crowded at the top entering round two, which meant everyone was battling to put up that potential winning number down the stretch. One name that stood out at the top though was Doug LaCrosse, of Tampa, who had recently come off a victory two weeks prior at The Fox Club. LaCrosse picked up right where he left off at The Fox Club and put together two solid rounds of 72-75--147 (+3), to ultimately come out one shot ahead of Bill Barnes 75-73--148 (+4). LaCrosse played his last ten holes at even par on Tuesday to secure his narrow victory over Barnes and capture his third Winter Series title in 2018. In the first flight of the Super-Senior division, Kim Schwencke, of Tampa, won by two shots and came in with a two day total of 83-76--159. Schwencke shot the low round of the day within his flight to beat out Tom Keedy by two shots.
