Three Claim this Week's Winter Series

TRINITY, Fla. — The Winter Series traveled to Fox Hollow Golf Club, located in Trinity, for the third event of the new year! Fox Hollow Golf Club proved to be a great test for the players as there was only one under-par round over the two days. Paul Royak, Richard Kerper, and Kim Schwencke took home wins in their respective divisions.

Mid-Amateur 

David McMeen, of Wesley Chapel, and Paul Royak, of Tampa, fired a round one 72 (+1) to tie for the early lead. Royak finished strong during round one with an eagle on the par five 15th hole providing him with momentum to break the tie in round two. Royak continued his impressive play in round two, posting a birdie on his second hole of the day followed by another eagle on the par five 4th hole. Making the turn at 33 (-2), Royak birdied the 17th hole to card an even par 71 for a one over-par total of 143. McMeen started the final round with four straight pars but fell to three bogies in a row before teeing off on the 10th hole. Finishing three strokes back in second place, McMeen carded a second round 74 for a 146 (+4) total. Clearwater resident, Brendan Takacs, rounded out the top three with consistent rounds of 74-75 for a seven over-par 149 total. Royak earned his first FSGA win of 2019 after finishing tied for second at the Country Club of Winter Haven winter series event in early January. 

John Barry claimed the lead in the First Flight by one stroke over John Gabler, of Tampa. Barry, of University Park, played five strokes better in round two with a round of 76 to finish first at 157 (+15). Jason Coolik, who was tied for the lead after round one, finished in third place with rounds of 81-78—159 (+17). 

Senior 

Richard Kerper, of Oldsmar, overcame a four stroke deficit by posting the tournament low round on day two that earned him a win! Pembroke Pines resident, Baldonick Fernandez, took the early lead with a round one score of 72. Despite three birdies in his final round, Fernandez finished with a 79 and tournament total 151 (+9) in second place. Kerper did not let six bogies in his first round hold him back from an impressive scorecard in round two. A scorecard full of all pars and four birdies crowned Kerper victorious after a second round 67 and 143 (+1) total. Consistency allowed Chuck Davis, of Tampa, to finish in third place after two rounds of 77. Kerper is a back-to-back winter series champion after winning the previous Four-Ball event at the Country Club of Winter Haven with partner Doug LaCrosse. 

In the First Flight, Per Fredriksson claimed first place by seven strokes after rounds of 82-76—158 (+16). Dan Gladman, of Sanford, finished in second place at 165 (+23). 

Super-Senior 

Kim Schwencke, of Tampa, finished with an even par round to win his first FSGA event of 2019.  Schwencke got off to a strong start in round one making birdies on the first two holes only to follow up in round two with a birdie on his second hole and eagle on the fourth. Playing steady for the remainder of the final round, Schwencke won by one stroke with rounds of 75-71—146 (+4). First round leader, Doug LaCrosse, of Tampa, finished in second place after rounds of 72 - 75 for a 147 (+5) total. Jerry Young, of New Port Richey, finished three strokes back in third place with rounds of 76-73—149 (+7).  In the First Flight, Jim Stone posted a final even par round to finish in first at 154 (+12). Stone won by six strokes over Carey Watson who carded rounds of 81-79—160.

Eligibility

Entries are open to male amateur golfers who are age 25 or older as of February 26, 2019 and a Regular or Foundation Member of the FSGA.

Entry Fees & Prizes

• $160 ($170 - members who do not have an active FSGA/GHIN Handicap).
• Late entries will be accepted subject to a $10 late entry fee should the entrant gain acceptance into the field.
• Age-group Champions at each event will receive a commemorative award. Gift certificates (totaling approximately $30 per-player in the field) will be awarded to the top finishers in each age group. 

Tee Times

• Round 1 - 11:30 AM off the 1st & 10th tees 
• Round 2 - 8:30 AM shotgun start 

Individual Age Divisions & Yardages

There are three age divisions; Mid-Amateur (25-54), Senior (55-64) and Super-Senior (65 & above). Each player must compete in the age division commensurate with their age as of February 26, 2019. Competitors may not elect to play in a different age division or from a different tee than designated.

• Mid-Amateur (25-54) plays approximately 6,700 yards
• Senior (55-64) plays approximately 6,400 yards
• Super-Senior (65 & above) approximately 6,100 yards

**After the first round, each age division may be flighted based on the number of competitors and/or the range of scores.
