Southeastern Challenge Match

Georgia captures the 16th Southeastern Challenge Match with 24 points, while Florida finished second with 21 points and Alabama finished third with 18 points at the Bear’s Club in Jupiter, FL.

Day one morning matches saw great play by all teams in windy conditions resulting in 3 points for each team. Securing Florida’s three morning points were Owen Joyner/Peter Wegmann with a 3 & 2 victory, RJ Nakashian/Rick Woulfe with a 4 & 3 victory and Kelly Sellers/Tyler Shook with a 2 up win. Sellers and Shook were 2 down thru 14 holes and stormed back to win the final 4 holes! 

The afternoon of day one continued with foursome matches, where Georgia took control. Florida was able to secure 4 points with stellar play from Chip Brooke/Marc Dull claiming 2 points by winning both matches over Alabama and Georgia. Other points secured in the afternoon where from Kelly Sellers/Tyler Shook and the team of Owen Joyner/Peter Wegmann.

In the final round, three ball matches were the form of play putting a Florida player against Georgia and Alabama. Florida players that won both matches included: Peter Wegmann, Chip Brooke and RJ Nakashian. Others that were able to grab points for Florida included: Owen Joyner, Rick Woulfe, Marc Dull, Robert Bechtol, Gary Nicklaus and Joe Alfieri. Florida came up short in their bid to capture a fourth consecutive title. Florida will look to regain the cup when the matches head to Georgia in 2019. The all time standings are now Florida - 8, Georgia - 7, and Alabama - 1.

The Southeastern Challenge Matches are a biennial Ryder Cup style match play competition pitting twelve man amateur teams, eight Mid-Amateurs and four Seniors, from Alabama, Florida and Georgia. The Matches consist of four-ball, foursome and individual matches over two days, with one point awarded to the winning team for each match. One-half point is awarded to each side for halved matches.

Tournament Results

Southeastern Challenge Match is a tri-state biennial competition between Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. The men’s Southeast Challenge Match debuted at Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando, Florida, in 1989 as an event intended to promote goodwill and competition between the best amateur players, playing as a team, from Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.

Teams

Each team from Florida, Georgia, and Alabama consists of:

  • Two players 55 years of age and older as of the first day of the match.
  • Two players 50 years of age and older as of the first day of the match.
  • Seven players 25 years of age and older as of the first day of the match.
  • One player 21 years of age and older as of the first day of the match.

Team Selection

Each state may select its team by whichever method they choose. The FSGA team is determined as follows:

  • (1) Senior player with the highest point totals from the Senior Two Year Points List as of September 11, 2017
  • (1) Senior player selected by the FSGA Championship Committee
  • (5) Mid-Amateur players with the highest point totals from the Two Year Points List as of September 11, 2017
  • (2) Players 50 and older selected by the FSGA Championship Committee
  • (2) Mid-Amateur players selected by the FSGA Championship Committee
  • (1) Amateur player 21 and older selected by the FSGA Championship Committee

The FSGA Championship Committee will make its team selections by Wednesday, September 13th. The Championship Committee reserves the right to announce the Senior selections after the completion of the US Senior Amateur Championship.

Championship Field Size

36 players; 12 players from each state.

Scoring

Each match is played as an 18 hole stipulated round.

  • One point for a win
  • One-half point for a match ending all square
  • No points for a loss
