62nd Senior Amateur to Resume at Lago Mar

October 15, 2023

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Nearly six months after the championship first began, the 62nd Senior Amateur Championship will resume on Monday at Lago Mar Country Club. After the first round was completed in early April, a historic flash flood event occurred in Fort Lauderdale area where there was 25 inces of rain within a two-day period causing play at the the Senior Amateur Championship to be suspended for 187 days.

In total, 144 players teed it up at Lago Mar Country Club back in April, but with the rescheduled date 92 players will make their way back to Fort Lauderdale for the completion of the championship.

When the championship resumes on Monday, six players will be tied at the top of the leaderboard at 1-under par 71: Bob Levy, Ryan Howison, Kevin Altenhof, Daniel Owen, Miles McConnell and Joe Shaktman.

McConnell carded his first birdie of the day on the 10th, adding two more on the 16th and 17th. The Tampa native ran into some trouble on the 18th chipping it from off the green into the water, finishing with a double bogey to fall back to 1-under 71 for the day.

Owen birdied the 18th, his final hole of the day, to card a 1-under 71, while Shaktman finished the day bogey free with a birdie on the 10th.

Five players sit in a tie for seventh at even-par 72, with only 12 players finishing the extremely windy April day at even par or better.

Mike McCoy, the 2022 Senior Amateur champion and U.S. Walker Cup captain, posted a first-round 72 to sit one shot back of the leaders. Owen, who holds a share of the first-round lead, captured the win at the 1998 Amateur Championship and is seeking his fifth FSGA championship. McConnell is the reigning FSGA Senior Player of the Year and is looking to win his first Senior Amateur Championship. With the Senior Player of the Year race coming to a conclusion, the resumption of the Senior Amateur will weigh heavily into who comes out on top in the points race.

The Senior Amateur Championship is the fourth FSGA championship held at Lago Mar Country Club. The Plantation club previously hosted the 2015 Senior Amateur Match Play Championship and the 2011 Senior Four-Ball Championship. Founded in 1970, Lago Mar was originally designed by Bill Watts, with Kipp Schulties leading the redesign in 2009 to create the challenging championship golf course there is today.
