Mission Valley Winter Series Champions

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

Peter Navaretta and Andy Spears captured the 40-54 age division of the FSGA Winter Series Four-Ball event at Mission Valley Country Club, in Nokomis, January 23- 24. Glen Davis and Butch Von Weller topped the 55-64 age division as Tom Austin and Tommy Piazza edged out the field for the 65 and over age division title.

In the 40-54 age division, Peter Navaretta, from Port Saint Lucie, and Andy Spears, of Palm City, recorded a tournament total of 9-under par 135, to win the division title by four strokes. Navaretta and Spears fired a seven-under par 65 in the first round to hold a five stroke lead heading into the final round of play. The pair shot a two-under par round of 70 in the final round to secure the title. The team from Sarasota, Tom Niedenfuer and John Vaccaro, finished in second place with a tournament total of five-under par 139. Barry Cesarz, of Boynton Beach, and Mike Nealy, of Boca Raton, finished in third place after rounds of 71-69.

Glen Davis, of Orlando, and Butch Von Weller, from Winter Park, went wire-to-wire to secure the 55-64 age division title with a tournament total of 132. Davis and Von Weller posted rounds of 64-68, to win by one stroke. Bill Barnes, of Bonita Springs, and Sam Till, from Fort Wayne, IN, fired a final round five-under par 67 to grab second place honors with a tournament total of 133. The team of David Brown, from Nokomis, and Gregg Shires, of Fort Myers, and the team of Marc Rosenbaum, of Hollywood, and Steve Sponder, of Plantation, finished tied for third place with a tournament total of eight-under par 136.

Tom Austin, of Lake Wales, and Tommy Piazza, of Sarasota, erased a three stroke deficit to secure the 65 and over age division title. After a first round of three-under par 69 the pair would trail by three strokes heading into the final round. Austin and Piazza fired a final round of five-under par 67 to secure the title by one stroke with a tournament total of eight-under par 136. Three teams finished tied for second place including the first round leaders from Venice, Joseph DeVita and Mack Wilcox, the team of Jerry Beeker, of Brooksville, and Jerry Jackson, of Sarasota, and the team of Fred Allen, of North Venice, and Freeman Allen, of Ripton, VT, with a tournament total of seven-under par 137.

The Winter Series events include seven competitions, six individual events and one four-ball event. There are three age divisions, Mid-Senior (40-54), Senior (55-64) and Super Senior (65 & over). The Winter Series is a great opportunity for golfers to compete in competitive events that normally may not because they do not live in Florida year round.

Stasi Captures 80th Jones/Doherty

Monday, January 23, 2012

Meghan Stasi, of Oakland Park, captured the 80th annual Ione D. Jones/Doherty Women’s Amateur Championship at Coral Ridge Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, on January 17-21. Stasi defeated Boca Raton’s Jaye Marie Green 1-up in the final match on Saturday.

After coming off strong finishes at the Harder Hall Invitational and Women’s South Atlantic Amateur (SALLY), placing 8th and 13th respectively, Stasi a three-time U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion, was able to continue her momentum at Coral Ridge. She took out Charley Hull, the world’s number six golfer and defending champion, during Thursday’s quarterfinals, and was victorious over the UK’s Harriet Beasley in the semi-finals.

In the finals, Stasi was 2-up through six when Green turned the match around. Green birdied number seven and took advantage of Stasi’s three-putt bogeys on eight and nine to go 1-up. Stasi rallied back to tie the match with a birdie on 12, then went 1-up again at 15 when Green found trouble. On 18 Stasi was able to close out the match with a two-putt par from 20 feet.
