TAMPA, Fla. – After a remarkable season, Marc Dull has been named the 2023 Amateur and Mid-Amateur Player of the Year. Miles McConnell has garnered Senior Player of the Year honors for the third-straight season, while David Anthony has been awarded the Super-Senior Player of the Year honors.
This is the third Player of the Year honor for Dull and the first since 2018. McConnell also collects his third Player of the Year award, while Anthony earns his third Player of the Year honor in the last four years.
Amateur and Mid-Amateur Player of the Year
Dull was honored with the both the Amateur and Mid-Amateur Player of the Year awards following a standout 2023 season, that saw three FSGA championship victories and a USGA championship appearance.
“We have so many great players in this state it makes winning Player of the Year a very tough thing to do,” Dull said. “It means you have to play really strong and consistent golf all season. Fortunately, I was able to play some of my best golf at the right time, in the biggest events, and pick up a few wins, including one I've been so close at for a long time at the State Amateur.”
Dull captured an historic win at the 106th Amateur Championship in June, becoming the first Mid-Amateur in 20 years to raise the Florida Amateur trophy. He took home the victory at 17-under 271, the lowest under-par score in Florida Amateur history, while his seven-shot win is the largest margin of victory at the Amateur since 2013.
The Lakeland native teamed up with Rhett Pooley to take home the win at the Two-Man Scramble Championship in July. Dull added a victory at the Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship in October, winning in wire-to-wire fashion. This marked Dull’s second Mid-Amateur Stroke Play win, his eighth-career FSGA win and his third of the season.
He added a Round of 16 appearance at the Amateur Match Play Championship in August and a Round of 32 appearance at the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship, with Chip Brooke, in May. Dull also helped lead Florida to a victory at the 19th Southeastern Challenge Matches, finishing the weekend with a 3-2-0 record.
Senior Player of the Year
For the third-straight year, McConnell earned Senior Player of the Year honors following a season that saw success in both FSGA and USGA championships.
“Any time that you can be named Player of the Year in this state it is a great honor,” McConnell said. “I got my name on the Senior Amateur trophy this year with Mike McCoy, who won last year, and is one of the great amateurs in the game. It's so humbling and I'm just happy to earn this."
The Tampa native captured a commanding victory at the 62nd Senior Amateur Championship in October, taking home the six-shot victory in wire-to-wire fashion at 8-under 208. His championship total of 208 ties the lowest three-day total in Florida Senior Amateur history with Jim Carley, who carded an 8-under 208 in 2011, while his six-shot win is the largest margin of victory at the Senior Amateur since Gordon Marshall’s six-shot win in 2015.
McConnell’s Senior Amateur win was the fifth FSGA championship for McConnell and his first Senior Amateur title.
He teamed up with Pete Williams to win the Senior Four-Ball Championship. The two survived a playoff to capture the victory. McConnell added strong finishes at the Florida Senior Open Championship in May, finishing inside the top-10, and advancing to the Round of 32 at the 42nd Mid-Amateur Championship.
The three-time Player of the Year qualified for his second-straight 2023 U.S. Senior Open Championship at SentryWorld in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, after earning medalist honors at the Lakewood National qualifier. McConnell also competed in his third-straight U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, advancing to match play for the third-consecutive year.
Most recently, McConnell was a member of the victorious Southeastern Challenge team, finishing the weekend undefeated with a 4-0-1 record. He ended the season with a third-place finish at the Senior Two-Man Shoot-Out with Williams.
Super-Senior Player of the Year
Anthony earned the Super-Senior Player of the Year for the third time in four years, after a successful 2023 season, that included an FSGA championship win and a number of top finishes.
"To be recognized by the state golf association in the state in which I reside is truly an honor," Anthony said. "Many thanks to the FSGA staff and the many volunteers."
The Jacksonville native captured the Super-Senior Amateur Match Play Championship in June, raising the trophy at Buckhorn Springs Golf and Country Club. He defeated Ken Palladino, 5 and 4, to capture his 13th FSGA victory.
Anthony added another top finish at the Super-Senior Amateur Championship, finishing in fourth place in March. The three-time Player of the Year also secured a fourth-place finish at the Two-Man Scramble Championship with Steve Sponder in July.
All three players will be honored at the FSGA’s Annual Dinner in Orlando at Shingle Creek later this month. The Annual Dinner celebrates the best players in the state, volunteers, board members and many other important individuals involved in the game of golf in Florida.
