Boynton Beach, Fla. – After a tough, windy first day at Indian Spring Country Club, mother nature continued to not cooperate, causing the FJT Indian Spring Open to be shortened to 18 holes. Emile Lebrun fired the only round in the 60’s for the boys while Kayla Bryant, Chloe Kovelesky and Angela Nip earned a three way victory in the girl’s division
Boys (16-18)
In only the second group of the day, Emile Lebrun got off to as good of a start as one could ask for. An opening eagle set the tone for the rest of the round. With bogeys on the 14th and 9th and birdies on the 16th, 3rd, and 7th (after starting on the 10th hole), Lebrun was able to secure his first victory of the year.
However, it was not done without a little bit of pressure put on him by Jack Nicoletta. Nicoletta did not even know he was in the field until three days before the tournament, but that did not stop him from firing a two-under par 70. After being tied for the lead with 2 holes left to play, a costly bogey on the par 4 8th hole cost him a tie for the lead.
Girls (16-18)
In the Girls Division, we had a three-way tie for first place between Chloe Kovelesky, Kayla Bryant and Angela Nip. All three players earned their first FJT victory of the calendar year.
Starting with reigning Women’s Player of the Year, Kovelesky is coming off of an injury and only picked up a club four days ago after missing multiple weeks. Despite that, she was able to string together three birdies in her first seven holes. Despite slowing down in the middle of the round, her final birdie on the 14th hole was enough to give her the lead.
Kayla Bryant shares great friendship with Kovelesky and even though she wanted to beat her, Bryant said after the round “We have never both won a golf tournament together, this is awesome!” Just like her best friend atop the leaderboard, Bryant played the first seven holes in three-under par. However, a bogey on the 17th hole cost her the individual win.
Last but certainly not least, Angela Nip had a much simpler, stress free round of 70. Her three birdies through 10 holes, followed by a bogey on 12 gave her her round of two-under par. In only her first start this year, she was able to secure her victory. Nip is certainly a player to keep your eye on as the year goes on.
