Junior Match Play Underway

July 21, 2015

The Boys 16-18 age division battled through a suspension lasting two hours at Southern Hills Plantation Golf Club in Brooksville. Further south at Carrollwood Country Club in Tampa, the Boys 13-15 and Girls divisions were not as fortunate. Due to the amount of rain the golf course became unplayable and the juniors had to wait many hours to finish their second round of stroke play.

After finishing the second round of stroke play in the morning, the Boys 16-18 age division was cut to the low 32 players who teed it up in the afternoon for their first match at Southern Hills Plantation. Advancing to match play as the number one seed was Brett Beazant, of Windermere, who posted two steady rounds of 71-72--143. Brett had the shot of the day during the first round when he scored a hole-in-one of the 17th hole. An impressive second round 68 (-4) earned Andrew Kozan, of Palm Beach Gardens, the second seed. Matthew Mourin finished as the third seed after rounds of 74-72—146.

Round one matches began in the afternoon with much excitement. Yuki Fujii, who finished as the 32nd seed, defeated Brett Beazant, number one seed, on the 17th hole with a chip-in birdie for a 3 & 1 win. The 31st seed, Travis Wells, played his way to a 6 & 5 victory over the number two seed, Andrew Kozan. The highlight of the day came from Hou Kuan Choi who holed out for an eagle, 2, on the 18th hole to win his match against Nilo Sanchez 2 up. Matthew Mourin advanced to Round of 16 matches after defeating Cameron Fady, 30th seed, 7 & 5. Round of 16 matches begin Wednesday morning at 7:30 followed by the Quarterfinal matches in the afternoon.

At Carrollwood Country Club, the Boys 13-15 and Girls 13-18 age divisions finally completed the second round of stroke play just before dark on Tuesday. The field did not have the opportunity to begin match play and first round matches will begin on Wednesday morning. Each division was narrowed down to 16 players. In the Boys 13-15 division Tyler Wilkes is the number one seed after steady rounds of 72-74—146. The low round of the day came from Justin Rickerson, who posted 71 (-1) to finish tied for second place.
