North Team Wins the Junior FL Cup

The North Team claimed the 7th Junior Florida Cup at The Old Collier Golf Club in Naples earning 21 points to the South Team’s 11 points on July 30-31. This marks the North Team’s sixth consecutive victory as the 1st Junior Florida Cup ended in a tie. Click here for full results.

After the first day of the Junior Florida Cup, the North Team led by only three points after securing 9 1/2 points to the South’s 6 1/2. The teams were tied at 4 points apiece after the morning four-ball matches. Playing for the North, Emma Albrecht and partner Latanna Stone defeated Emma Bradley and Ashley Malinchak, 3 and 1. Ryan Stovash and Kevin Reilly defeated Alex Rios and Matthew Mourin, 6 & 4 in the morning round. Playing for the South, Hunter O’Mahony and Connor Baldwin defeated Luis Gagne and the 2012 (13-15) Boys’ Junior Champion Andy Zhang 5 & 4  and Stephanie Carlozzi and partner Annie Dulman defeated Madison Opfer and Anna Newell, 1up, to help the South earn key points entering the afternoon matches. In the afternoon round of mixed foursomes, the North Team built a lead entering the final day earning 5 1/2 points to the South’s 2 1/2.

On the final day of singles matches, the North Team dominated earning 11 1/2 points for a team total of 21 points, to retain the cup for yet another year. Logan Lanier, Gabriel Lench, Ryan Stovash and Latanna Stone all went 3-0 for the North team. Other key contributors were Emma Albrecht and Travis Trace who went 2-0-1 for the tournament.

The Junior Florida Cup matches 16 players from the North against 16 players from the South in a Ryder Cup format. Each team consists of 10 boys and 6 girls selected mostly from the Florida Junior Tour (FJT) points list. The first morning, each boy and girl is paired with a partner to compete in a four-ball match. In the afternoon round, the boys and girls are paired together to play mixed-foursomes matches. The final day each player competes in a singles match against a player from the opposing team. Points are awarded to each match similarly to the Ryder Cup to determine the winning team. Last year, the North team claimed the 6th Junior Florida Cup earning 18 points to the South team’s 14 points.
