Semifinals Set at Women’s Amateur

June 15, 2019

BRADENTON, Fla.  The 90th Women’s Amateur Championship field has been whittled down to four players after the Round of 16 and Quarterfinal matches on Saturday at the Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club.

Three college players, Emmy Martin, Kendall Griffin and Elizabeth Moon, are headed to the final day of the championship, while Georgia Ruffolo is the lone junior player remaining.

After taking down the medalist, Megan Schofill in the morning, Martin defeated Ramya Meenakshisundaram, 4 and 3, in the afternoon. The recent Texas Christian University graduate took a quick 1-up lead on the second hole, but Meenakshisundaram brought the match back to all square on the fourth.

Martin, who fell in the Round of 64 at last year’s championship, closed out the front nine by winning the sixth and the ninth hole. She closed out the match with a birdie on the 14th hole, her seventh birdie of the match.

Ruffolo took the lead over Meiyi Yan on the fifth hole in the afternoon and never let it go, capturing a 4 and 3 victory. The Tampa native won the 14th hole to go 4 up on Yan, before securing the victory with a halved hole on the 15th.

Moon took down Lauren Clark, 3 and 1, in the quarterfinals on Saturday. She won the second hole with a par to take an early 1-up lead, but Clark quickly brought the match back to all square on the fourth hole.

The sophomore at the University of Central Florida headed to the back nine with a 1-up lead and extended it with a birdie on the 10th hole. Moon secured the victory with a par on the 17th to win the hole and the match
