Five Things to Know: Boys’ Junior (16-18)

July 3, 2020

TAMPA, Fla. – Streamsong Resort is set to host its second-straight Boys’ Junior Amateur Championship. Next week, the best junior golfers from around the state will make the trip to Streamsong with the hope of raising the trophy at the end of the week.

Here are five things to know before the championship begins on Tuesday.

Tough Test Ahead at Streamsong

Streamsong Resort will host its second-straight Boys’ Junior Championship, after the 2019 championship was played on the Red and Blue Courses last year. A Gil Hanse design, the Black Course at Streamsong will be playing host to its first Boys’ Junior. The Black Course operates on nearly 300 acres and is fairly notorious for its scale. The championship will prove to be a physical and mental test all weekend long.

Defending the Crown

Justin Ross will look to go back-to-back at the Boys’ Junior Championsip. The Boca Raton native birdied four of the first six holes on his way to a final-round 66. He overcame a three-shot deficit to capture the 2019 championship. Chase Gullikson, the 2018 champion, will also be in the field at Streamsong.

Qualifiers Look to Make a Splash

Nine players punched their ticket to the Boys’ Junior Championship in June at The Country Club of Winter Haven.  Tyler Mistretta took first place at the qualifier, posting a 4-under 68. Charles Kurtz grabbed the last spot, after advancing through a three-player playoff.

FJT Winners Set Sights on State Title

Seven FJT winners from this season will be in the field at Streamsong. Gregory Solhaug picked up the win at the FJT Major in January at Capital City Country Club. Andrew Clark earned the win at the Next 100 Invitation in January.

Player of the Year in the Mix

The 2019 Boys’ Junior Player of the Year, Nicholas Gabrelcik will look to add the Boys’ Junior title to an already impressive resume. The incoming freshman at the University of North Florida captured the 2019 Amateur Public Links Championship, before going on to earn Low Amateur honors and a sixth-place finish at the 2019 Florida Open Championship.
