Stasi Wins U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur

October 11, 2012

Oakland Park’s Meghan Stasi wins her fourth US Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship title on Thursday at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.  Stasi claimed a 6 & 5 victory over Liz Waynick of Scottsdale, Arizona.

Stasi, the 2012 FSGA Women’s Amateur Match Play Champion, made a huge comeback during her second match of the Championship where she was 5 down with 6 to play.  Meghan defeated the odds and made an historical championship comeback, winning her match in 21 holes.  Unlike her semi-final match, Stasi dominated her final match 6 & 5, winning five straight holes on 9-13 to end her match.

This is Meghan’s fourth U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship title.  She has captured these titles in the years of 2006, 2007, 2010, and now 2012.  The only other player to have four US Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship titles is last year’s defending Champion and this year current US Senior Women’s Champion Ellen Port of St. Louis, Missouri.

The 2012 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur is the first national championship conducted at Briggs Ranch Golf Club, but sectional qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur and the USGA Senior Amateur has been previously staged at Briggs Ranch, along with local U.S. Open qualifying.  Briggs Ranch Golf Club, a Tom Fazio layout, is set up at 6,142 yards and will play to a par of 36-36--72.  The championship is open to amateur female golfers who have reached their 25th birthday on or before Oct. 6, 2012, and who hold a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 9.4.
