Higgins Hoists Women's Senior Match Play Trophy

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. – Gigi Higgins hoisted the trophy at the final FSGA women’s championship for the 2021 season. Higgins took home the win on Thursday at the Women's Senior Amateur Match Play Championship at Southern Hills Plantation Club.

The 2021 championship began Tuesday, with an 18-hole stroke-play seeding round for the Championship Division. Therese Quinn, of Jacksonville pushed through a foggy start to the day to earn medalist honors with a 2-over 74. 

The Championship Division began the round of 16 on Wednesday morning. Laura Carson, of Vero Beach, picked up the biggest win of the morning, defeating Taffy Brower, 6 and 4. Defending champion Sherry Herman, the No. 1 seed, advanced with a 2-and-1 victory over Alexander Frazier, of North Palm Beach.

On Wednesday afternoon, competitors teed it up for the quarterfinal matches. Kim Keyer-Scott, the 2021 Florida Women’s Open Senior champion, defeated Herman, 4 and 2, to advance to the semifinals.  After suspending Wednesday evening for darkness, Gigi Higgins, of Cape Coral, and Lin Culver, from Palm Coast, resumed early Thursday morning where Higgins claimed a 2-and-1 victory.  Mary Jane Hiestand, of Naples and Carson also had to come back early Thursday morning to finish their match. Carson took Hiestand to the 18th hole where Hiestand secured a 1-up victory to advance to the semifinals.    

Higgins and Marion Reid, of Lakeland, faced off in the championship match on Thursday afternoon, after the morning semifinal matches. Higgins took the first lead of the day on the ninth hole. Higgins made the only birdie of the day on hole 15 to extend her lead to 2-up going into hole 16. It was a solid par on hole 17 that would secure the 2-and-1 victory for Higgins, her first FSGA championship win 2021.

Sandi St. Onge was victorious in the Championship First bracket, defeating Susan Temple, 2 and 1. In the Championship Second Bracket, Shauna Snyder defeated Melissa Gotfredson in 19 holes.

The Middle Division saw Mary Ann Modrak and Laura Koach advance to the final match, where Koach earned the victory, 4 and 3. Beth Pajak and Linda Jane Parson faced off in the final match of the Forward Division. Pajak took home the win with a 3-and 2 victory against Parson. In the Middle First Flight, Cheryl Sadlon defeated Peggy Butts 1 up while Catherine Saenz defeated Carol Klay 2 and 1 to secure the Forward First Flight.
