Lago Mar Set to Shine for 62nd Senior Amateur

PLANTATION, Fla. - Lago Mar Country Club has over a 50 year history in the Fort Lauderdale golf scene, and in April, the 62nd Senior Amateur Championship will take center stage at Lago Mar with top 144 senior amateur battling it out for the title. 

Founded in 1970, the Lago Mar has always had a strong playing membership and a consistent host of South Florida PGA events, USGA qualifying and FSGA qualifying. The par-72 layout was orginally designed by Bill Watts, with by Kipp Schulties leading the redesign in 2009 to create the challenging championship golf course there is today.

The Plantation club will play host to its fourth FSGA championship with the 62nd Senior Amateur, having previously hosted the 2015 Senior Amateur Match Play Championship and the 2011 Senior Four-Ball Championship.

A familiar name to the FSGA and Lago Mar raised the trophy at the 2011 Senior Four-Ball Championship. Rick Woulfe, a FSGA Hall of Fame member and longtime Lago Mar member, teamed up with Bob Ethridge to capture the title at his home club. The eight-time Senior Player of the Year and 2019 Super-Senior Player of the Year captured the Senior Amateur Championship in 2008, but has knocked on the door numerous times since, most recently finishing runner-up in 2019. In addition to countless state and national acomplishments, Woulfe has caputred 31 Club Championship titles at Lago Mar, most recently in 2022.

"Lago Mar Country Club is very proud and excited to be hosting the 62nd Senior Amateur Championship," said Woulfe. " I know all the competitors will enjoy a very good test of their games on a very well manicured track."

Another competitor who will have a home-course advantage is Steve Sponder, a longtime Lago Mar Member, FSGA Foundation Member and owner of Global Golf Sales.

"It is exciting to have the Senior Amateur Championship at Lago Mar, my home club" said Sponder. "The Senior Amateur is a very prestegious event, and I am very proud to have the opporutnity to compete with all the other great players from around the state. My fellow Lago Mar members are looking forward to hosting this tournament, and our staff has it in excellent conditions."

Mike McCoy came out on top at the 61st Senior Amateur Championship last year at Avila Golf & Country Club. The was the lone player to finish under par to capture the two-shot victory at 1-under 212. McCoy has appeared previoulsy in 65 USGA Championships, and captured the 2013 USGA Mid-Amateur Championship at the age of 50. The 2023 Curtis Cup will look to defend his title this April at Lago Mar.
