Things to Know: Women’s Senior Amateur

TAMPA, Fla. – The top senior women amateurs in the state will head to Naples next week for the Women’s Senior Amateur Championship, which begins on Monday at Eagle Creek Golf & Country Club.

Here are five things to know before the championship begins.

Defending the Crown

Terrill Samuel will look to go back-to-back after capturing the Women’s Senior Amateur title at the 2022 championship. The Canada native posted rounds of 72-76-73 at Eagle Creek to secure the two-shot victory. Samuel will look to become the fifth player in FSGA history to win two-straight Women’s Senior titles.

Super-Senior Champion Back for More

Taffy Brower took home the Women’s Super-Senior title at last year’s championship. The Boynton Beach resident earned the three-shot win with rounds of 81-78. She became the first player to win both a Women’s Senior Amateur and Women’s Super-Senior title in FSGA history, capturing the Women’s Senior Amateur in 2008.

Fifty-Four Holes on Deck

The Senior Championship Division will compete in 54 holes of stroke play, while the Super-Senior and Field Divisions will play 36 holes of stroke play. The Senior and Super-Senior championship will be crowned on the final day of the championship.

Eagle Creek Plays Host

Eagle Creek Golf & Country Club will host its second-straight Women’s Senior Amateur Championship and its eighth FSGA championship. A Larry Packard-designed course, Eagle Creek went through a renovation in 2017, led by Gordon Lewis.

Past Champions in the Field

The 2023 field includes past six Senior Amateur champions (Brower, Susan Cohn, Kim Keyer-Scott, Diane Lang, Mary Jane Hiestand and Samuel) and four past Super-Senior champions (Brower, Patricia Hughes-Gelardi and Christine Hunt).

Hiestand is a four-time Women’s Senior champion, while Lang has picked up three victories at the Women’s Senior in her career.
