It’s Tight at the Top at the 54-Hole Majors

January 14, 2024

This weekend the Florida Junior Tour kicked off the 2024 season with two 54-hole Majors. The (16-18) division is competing at Seminole Legacy, home to the Florida State University golf teams, while the (13-15) division is competing at Mark Bostick Golf Course, home to the University of Florida golf teams. Ahead of the final round, the leader board is tight at the top.

FSU Boys (16-18) Division

Lucas Gimenez holds the lead heading into the final round on Monday, January 15. Gimenez fired scores of 71-74 to hold a one stroke lead over the field. Gimenez explains his game plan on attacking Seminole Legacy, “you have to position yourself really well to score on this course. These greens are super tough, so you have to put yourself in a good position to be able to make putts.”

Similarly, Brandon Lohr described some keys to playing Seminole Legacy are to hit fairways and have good pace around the greens. Lohr shot the only score in the 60’s firing a four-under par, 68. He climbed twenty-one places on the leaderboard to sit one shot back of Gimenez.

FSU Girls (16-18)

Zoe Shamy has held the lead for the first two rounds of the tournament posting a consistent score of 74 each day. She has carded four birdies over 36 holes and holds a four-shot lead heading into the final round. Shamy explains that she has been able to stay consistent and play well by forgetting about the bad shots and not focusing on the fact that she is in the lead. Instead, she is focusing on “just playing golf.”

UF Boys (13-15)

The leaderboard changed frequently during the second round, but Parker Rodgers outlasted the field to hold the lead heading into the final round. Rodgers shot a two-over par, 72 after carding a first round score of 68. He sits at even par for the tournament and one shot ahead of the field. He explains how he has played the Mark Bostick golf course, "just have to find the fairway and miss the greens in the right spots. Placement is important on this course."

UF Girls (13-15)

Leonie Tavares holds the lead after the first two rounds. Tavares fired the low score during round one with a three over par, 73. She extended her lead by firing a 72 during the second round. She currently holds a nine stroke lead and plans on closing it out during the final round Monday. Tavares also describes the importance of placement on this golf course. She explained the necessity of a good drive because there are a lot of dogleg holes. She also aimed to hit the middle of the green due to the undulations and tricky hole locations.
