BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — A beautiful day at Aberdeen Golf & Country Club set the stage for the opening round of the 48th Senior Open Championship, where amateurs and professionals went head-to-head. The competition was intense from the start, with a crowded leaderboard promising an exciting and unpredictable moving day ahead.
What Happened?
A field of 156 professionals and amateurs teed it up with hopes of hoisting the trophy and taking home the $10,000 check at the conclusion of the Championship. Players were split into two waves, with half completing their rounds in the morning and the other half scheduled to play in the afternoon.
The morning wave delivered tightly contested play, as most of the field hovered around even par. Timothy Cantwell of PGA National Resort & Spa emerged as the early clubhouse leader, carding five birdies en route to a 3-under 69.
Close behind, Don Whittemore (a) and Mark Mielke of Lost City Country Club applied pressure with matching rounds of 2-under 70, sitting just one stroke off the pace as the morning wave came to a conclusion.
In the afternoon, scoring remained consistent with the morning as players continued to cluster around par. Miles McConnell (a) made a strong push up the leaderboard after making the turn at 2-under. He added a birdie on his 10th hole to briefly share the lead at 3-under. However, a bogey on his 14th and 16th halted his momentum, ultimately signing for a 1-under 71.
At the end of the day, 10 players were tied for eight place with first round even-par 72’s, two players were tied for sixth with 1-under 71’s, and four players were tied for second place with 2-under 70’s. Cantwell was able to capture solo first place as we look forward to the second round tomorrow.
What’s Next?
Round two tee times run from 7:45–9:32 AM and 12:15–2:03 PM off both #1 and #10. The field will be cut to the low 60 and ties by day’s end.
