VERO BEACH, Fla. – The 44th Mid-Amateur Championship is set to take place from May 8-11, 2025, at Moorings at Hawk’s Nest Golf Club in Vero Beach, Florida. This annual event gathers the state’s top mid-amateur golfers who will compete in 36 holes of stroke-play competition with the hope of being one of the 32 players who qualify for the match play portion of the Championship and ultimately walk away with the trophy.
This year’s Championship attracted nearly 550 players attempting to qualify at seven sites across Florida, emphasizing the strength and popularity of the event. In addition to the qualifying group, 41 players earned exemptions based on their past accomplishments and rankings, rounding out a stellar 84-player field.
Players to Watch
- Miles McConnell of Tampa enters the week in strong form after earning Low Amateur honors at the Florida Senior Open, where he tied for third overall. A past Senior Amateur Champion and semifinalist in the 41st Mid-Amateur, McConnell's resume and current momentum make him a serious contender.
- Will Davenport, the reigning FSGA Amateur Player of the Year, has emerged as one of Florida’s most consistent forces. With a semifinal finish at the 2024 U.S. Mid-Amateur, and 2024 U.S. Four-Ball (with Mike Smith) and a recent win at the Mid-Amateur Four-Ball (South), Davenport’s well-rounded game is built for match play.
- Joey Latowski of Port St. Lucie is a two-time Mid-Amateur Champion (2020, 2022) and will aim to become just the second player in history to win three titles. His aggressive style and championship pedigree make him one of the most feared match play opponents in the field.
- Ty Capps, the 2024 Mid-Amateur runner-up, returns looking to take the final step after a brilliant run last year. His strong play under pressure earned him respect throughout the bracket, and he’ll be one to watch again in 2025.
- Joe Alfieri, a 2025 Florida Senior Amateur Champion, two-time Mid-Amateur winner, and FSGA Hall of Fame inductee, brings unmatched experience to the Championship. Alfieri remains a threat in any format and will look to add another title to his decorated career.
- Additionally, Michael Barbosa, a member at Hawk’s Nest and former Georgia Tech standout, will enjoy a home-course advantage this week. Known for his collegiate and amateur success, Barbosa's familiarity with the course could be a key factor. Barbosa earned stroke play medalist honors at the 2019 Mid-Amateur Championship down the street at Quail Valley.
- T J Shuart, of Fort Lauderdale, captured his second FSGA Mid-Amateur Championship the last time the event was contested in Vero Beach in 2019, and is expected to be in contention in 2025.
Championship Format & Venue
The Championship opens with 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying. The low 32 scorers will advance to match play, with elimination rounds beginning Friday and concluding Sunday with the Championship final.
Set on the shores of the Indian River Lagoon, Moorings at Hawk’s Nest Golf Club is a challenging Jim Fazio design that will host its' first FSGA Championship since the Mid-Amateur Stroke Play in 2010. Tree-lined fairways, fast greens, and coastal winds will test every part of a player’s game.
