ENGLEWOOD, Fla. — The wind arrived right on schedule for the second round of the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, delivering the kind of challenge worthy of a state title. Lemon Bay Golf Club showcased its full bite with challenging hole locations and steady coastal gusts that kept players on high alert from the first tee to the final green.
After an even-par 71 in Friday’s opening round, FSGA’s very own Madyson Gold held the overnight lead, carrying a three-shot cushion into day two. But as the breeze stiffened, scores began to rise and the leaderboard tightened.
Gold finished with a second-round 77 (+6), while Sokhary Pavese climbed into a share of the lead with a solid 3-over 74, matching Gold at 6-over for the championship. The duo will head into Sunday’s final round in a tie at the top.
Just one shot back is 2021 Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion Kim Benedit, who birdied the 18th hole to card a 74 (+3) and finish the day with a tournament total of 7-over. That late birdie could prove crucial as she chases a second title.
Ailsa Clark and Suzanne Ricard sit tied for fourth at 9-over, well within striking distance, while 2023 FSGA Hall of Fame inductee Mary Jane Hiestand lurks just outside the top five, positioned to make a Sunday charge.
With just 18 holes remaining, the stage is set for a thrilling final round at Lemon Bay.
