LACANTO, Fla. – Fourty-Nine teams of two took on Black Diamond Ranch for the Mixed Shoot-Out Championship. In this unique event, three different formats were played including modified alternate shot, scramble and four-ball.
Teams were tasked to take on both courses at Black Diamond Ranch. The Ranch Course offered scoring opportunities throughout the round, where the Quarry Course challenged players to hit accurate shots into small greens.
Championship Division
The team of Jill and Carson Spence started their event with an opening round of 7-under par 65. The duo scored fairly evenly in both the scramble and the alternate shot portions. While ending the day two shots behind the leaders Nancy Vergara and Ricardo Garcia, the Spences' placed themselves in a great position heading into the final round.
With steady golf on day two of the championship in the four-ball format the team of Spence and Spence head into the difficult stretch of holes 13-17, to face the quarry section of the course. With an eagle on the reachable par 5, the Spences quickly made up the deficit and tied the lead. They did not slow down. A birdie on 15, and 16, vaulted the team to the lead and ultimately secured a spot in the playoff for first.
Also tied in first place was the 2023 Champions Jake and Courtney Johnson. The duo started their championship with an opening round 8-under par, 64, and stung together a solid final round of 4-under, 68 to tie the lead.
Both teams took to the scorable 1st hole for the playoff. With two solid tee shots, the Spence’s took control of the playoff. A solid shot into the green from Carson Spense provided a great look at birdie. With one good putt, the ball fell for birdie and the Spenses claimed their second Mixed Shoot-Out title.
Overall Forward Division
In the Forward Division of the championship, Jodi Kest and James Gurney played solid golf ending thier tournament with rounds of 71-69. This was enough for a one shot lead over the Forward Field. Their rounds consisted of six birdies.
In a tie for second place, the team of Stillman/Butler and Zhang/Kroll were the only other teams in the Forward division to finish under par with a total of 3-under par, 141.
