FORT MYERS, Fla. – In the second edition of the Legends Championship, the best golfers over the age of 70 took on The Golf Club at Crown Colony. Most recently host to the 2023 Florida Open Championship, Crown Colony’s beautiful paspalum grass and speedy greens led to some gettable conditions, with quite a few players breaking their age. In the end, it was
70-74 Division
During round one, players were able to take advantage of scorable conditions in the morning, but with winds picking up later in the day, it became a bit tougher. Terry Werner and David Anthony (who combined consist of the last five Super-Senior Players’ of the Year) battled it out and were both able to fire rounds under par. A spotless scorecard for Anthony led to his round of 3-under par 69, while Werner flipped the script late in the round, birdieing four of his last five holes to fire -3.
Round two became the Terry Werner show. Birdieing his first two holes, Werner was off and running. A double on the fourth did not stop him. He proceeded to birdie five of his next nine holes to run away with the lead. A few bogeys down the stretch would not be enough to stop Werner as he wins by four over David Anthony.
75-79 Division
In the middle of the three age groups, two players were able to shoot even par in round one to be tied for the lead at the halfway point. Jack Jackson and Dick Caverly both had a rollercoaster of a day, but in the end, they were able to right the ship to shoot even. Close behind is multi-time FSGA champion Pete McDade, as well as FSGA Hall of Famer Rick Woulfe, who fired +1.
Round two would see McDade come up and grab the lead, along with Bruce Moskovciak. The two would go into a playoff that lasted three holes. With both players making birdie on the first playoff hole, the race was on. Matching pars on the next would send them into a third, with Moskovciak coming away with one last birdie to put away McDade. This would be Bruce’s first FSGA Championship victory.
80 & Over Division
In what is truly an impressive feat, over half of the field was able to break their age, which not many people are able to say they have accomplished. In yet another tie for the lead, Jerry Rodeheaver and Jim DuBois fired rounds of +2, 74, to keep it a tight-knit battle between the two. Rodeheaver’s highlight of the day was an eagle on his last hole to get him back into a tie for the lead, while DuBois made two birdies en route to his 74.
Round two consisted of DuBois continuing to play steady golf, posting yet another round of 74, fending off a charging Robert Layman, who fired a final round 72. DuBois was able to avoid any big numbers en route to his first Legends Championship victory.
