Two Share Lead in Mid-Amateur

October 6, 2005

Don Gonsalves, of Pembroke Pines, and Richard Maddox, from Panama City, each fired a 4-under par 68 to be in front by two strokes. Gonsalves advanced to the Championship after qualifying at Emerald Dunes Golf Club while Maddox, the 2003 Amateur Champion, earned an exempt status. Four players posted a 2-under par 70 including last year’s Champion Steve Carter. At Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Carter, of Jacksonville, shot a 72-67-74—213 to win after the Championship was shortened due to the hurricanes. Also recording a 70 were Scott Smith, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Jon Veneziano, of Mount Dora, and Bret Voisin, of Orlando.

Round two tee-times begin at 8:00 am on Friday, October 7. After nine qualifiers across the state, 90 players advanced to the Championship at Keene’s Pointe. The Championship consists of 36-holes of stroke play qualifying over the first two days with the lowest 16 advancing to the match play on Saturday and Sunday. To be eligible for the State Mid-Amateur, participants must be 25 years of age or older as of October 6, 2005.
