32 Advance in Match Play

August 8, 2008

Kyle Westhorpe, of Titusville, the 63rd seed defeated Kelly McHugh, of Lakeland, 6 and 5 in the first round of match play. Westhorpe now plays Daniel Berger, of Jupiter, in the Round of 32. Berger, who won the 13-15 age division of the Junior Match Play Championship last week, won his first match 2 and 1. In the upper half of the bracket, top seed Jeff Williams, of Chuluota, won his first match 5 and 4 to face Stephen Anderson, of Hobe Sound, in the Round of 32. Williams fired a 6-under par 66 in the seeding round to secure the number one seed. The 2007 Mid-Amateur Champion Eddie Kenny, of Lake Worth, won his match 2 and 1 as Jon Veneziano, from Eustis, the 2005 Mid-Amateur Champion, also won his match to move on to the next round.

Since the number of entries received has always surpassed the capacity of the Championship, a qualifying stage was instituted last year. More than 320 players attempted to qualify at one of six sites across the state. In the qualifying, players competed in 18 holes of stroke play in hopes of reaching the Championship at Quail Valley. The Match Play Championship begins with an 18-hole seeding round to seed the 64 player field. Single elimination match play will follow to determine the Match Play Champion.
