Senior Am Match Play Champs

Pete Andrews defeated Bill O’Keefe 4 and 3 to win the 5th Senior Amateur Match Play Championship as Edward Craig defeated Bob Rogoff 5 & 4 to win the Super Senior Division at Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club on June 13-17.  

Before starting match play, Pete Andrews, of Lithia, earned the 5th seed after posting a 74 in the seeding round. Andrews proceeded to win four matches to reserve his spot in the final match. In the Round of 32, Andrews beat Gary Saft, of Fort Myers, in 20 holes to face Angus Hewitt, from Sebastian, in the next round. Andrews beat Hewitt 6 and 4 in the Round of 16. In the quarters, Andrews defeated Pete McDade, of Lakeland, 2 and 1. In the semifinal, Andrews defeated Steve Owen, from Vero Beach, 2 up to advance to the final match versus O’Keefe. Andrews won his fifth and final match defeating Bill O’Keefe, of Lake Worth 4 and 3. In the final match Andrews took the lead after the fourth hole to go 1 up and never looked back. Andrews turned at 3 up after nine holes and played steady golf on the way in to capture the title. In the Senior Division First Flight, John Begley, from Sarasota, defeated Michael Benham, of Ocala, 3 and 1.  

In the Super Senior Championship Bracket, 1st seed Edward Craig, of Orlando, beat Bob Rogoff, of Coral Springs, 5 and 4 for his second consecutive title. Craig defeated Bill Starks, of Punta Gorda, 6 and 5 in the Round of 16 and then beat Rollie Walcott, of Naples, 4 and 2 in the quarters. Craig continued his run winning his semifinal match 1 up against Ken Couturier, of Melbourne. Bill Western, from Aiken, defeated Peter Salzberg, of Bonita Springs, 6 and 5 to claim the Super Senior First Flight title.  

To be eligible, players must have reached 55 years of age by June 17, 2010. All players traveling to Orchid Island were guaranteed an 18-hole seeding round and at least one round of match play. After the 18-hole seeding round, the field was seeded into three Senior Division flights of 32 players for the Championship Flight, 16 players for the first flight and 8 players in the second flight. In the Super-Senior Division there were two flights; 16 players in the Championship flight and 8 players in the first flight.  Ultimately, there is a Senior Amateur Match Play Champion and a Super-Senior Amateur Match Play Champion.

The 2010 Senior Amateur Match Play Championship will be played on the east coast again this year, moving a few miles north to Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club. Designed by Arnold Palmer, the Orchid Island golf course opened in 1995 with 7,131 yards of golf.

ELIGIBILITY  

Must be a member of the FSGA and have reached 55 years of age by June 13, 2010.

ENTRY FEE  

$185 ($195 - members who do not have an active FSGA/GHIN Handicap).

SEEDING AND CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT 

All players will play an 18 hole stroke play seeding round to determine flights and seeding within each flight. Two flights of 32 each in the Senior division and one flight of 16 in the Super-Senior division. There will be a hole by hole play-off to determine the 32 seed in the Championship flight only; all other ties for seeds will be broken randomly.  All players will play one match on Monday morning. Matches will continue each morning. Only the Senior division flights will play Tuesday afternoon. The finals are scheduled for Thursday morning.

COURSE SET-UP

The golf course will be set-up approximately 6400 - 6500 yards (Senior) and 6100 - 6200 yards (Super-Senior).

DIVISIONS  

55-64 (Senior), 65 and over (Super-Senior). All players will be placed in the age division commensurate with their age as of the first day of the Championship. No player may play in both age divisions. (Any Super-Senior wishing to compete in the Senior division must notify the FSGA upon entry.)

TEE TIMES

Round one tee times will begin at 8:00 AM off the 1st and 10th tees. Play will begin at 8:00 AM every day.

PRACTICE ROUNDS

Practice rounds are available one week prior to the championship.  Practice rounds may be played after 12:00 PM on the weekend.  The price for your practice round is $30.00 + tax.  Please call (772) 388-9393 to arrange your practice round.  The proper place to practice your golf swing is on the driving range, hitting multiple shots on the course is unacceptable.

CARTS  

Carts are included for all competitive rounds. Players are responsible for practice round fees.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS

Senior Division: Tom Hyman, of Tampa, defeated Mark Rubin, from Miami Beach, 2 & 1 in the final match as Edward Craig, of Orlando, defeated Tommy Piazza, of Sarasota, 2 & 1 for the Super Senior title at Delray Dunes.

SPECTATORS AND CADDIES

Spectators and caddies are always welcome at FSGA Championships. Only players are allowed to ride in carts.  If a player employs a caddie, the caddie MUST walk and the player’s clubs must remain on the golf cart.

The FSGA Championships Committee/on-site Rules Committee reserves the right to alter any of the conditions, provisions and/or schedules.  The decision of the Championships Committee/on-site Rules Committee in any matter will be final.
