Hiestand & Hunt Prevail In Ocala

The Country Club of Ocala hosted the top senior and super-senior women in Florida for two days of tough competition. The leaderboard finished in a tight race after round one in the Senior Division as Kim Keyer-Scott took the early lead by one stroke. Keyer-Scott, of Bonita Springs, opened the Championship with a one over-par 73 with hopes of earning her first FSGA Championship victory. Close behind sat Alexander Frazier and three time Women’s Senior Amateur Champion, Mary Jane Hiestand both posting a 74. Another strong force and past Senior Amateur Champion, Lisa Schlesinger, trailed the lead in fourth place after a first round 75.

Mary Jane Hiestand proved that consistency is key as she posted two rounds of 74 to move from second to first place and win her fourth Senior Amateur Championship. Hiestand, 2017 Women’s Senior player of the year from Naples, carded two birdies on the front nine in her final round to finish with a 148 (+4) total and a five stroke victory. Rounding out the top three was Betsy Knights, of Naples, who is in her second year participating in FSGA events. Knights posted rounds of 77-78 to finish seven shots back at 155 (+11). Hiestand prevails for the fourth time as Champion in the third Women’s Championship of 2018.

Teri de Luis, of Sanford, played her way to the top of the Super-Senior leaderboard with a round one 80. Sara Jane Rose chased the lead, after finishing tied for 19th in 2017, with a first round 81. Rounding out the top three after round one sat Christine Hunt with a 82. Christine was on a mission to hunt first place down as she carded a second round 76 to capture a win! Hunt, of Ponte Vedra Beach, earned her first FSGA Championship victory by one stroke at 158 (+14). Sara Jane Rose never left second place finishing with a 78 and 159 total. Suggested Handicap Guidelines

The following should be considered when selecting divisions:

  • Senior Championship Division - 12.0 and Under
  • Senior Field Division - 13.0 and Over
  • Super-Senior Championship Division - 12.0 and Under
  • Super-Senior Field Division - 13.0 and Over

Committee Discretion: The Championship Committee reserves the right to move any player out of the Senior Field or Super-Senior Field Divisions if their handicap is significantly lower than the majority of the competitors in that division, and their scoring history does not reflect the need to play from either of those divisions.

Handicaps

  • All valid Florida GHIN Handicap Indexes used will be from the March 15, 2018 revision.
  • Each player must have a valid Florida GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 34.0.
  • Players in the Field Divisions will play to 100% of their course handicap.

It is the responsibility of any player that maintains a Handicap Index lower than her current Florida GHIN Handicap Index to inform the FSGA for resolution. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.

Flighting

The Championship Divisions are gross only and will not be flighted.

The Field Divisions will be pre-flighted based on individual handicaps and the number of competitors.

Generally, divisions of more than 14 individuals will be flighted, however the Committee reserves the right to flight based on the number of individuals and/or the range of combined individual handicaps or scores.

Breaking Ties

Championship Divisions - The overall Senior and Super-Senior Champions will be the individuals from their respective Championship Division with the lowest total score. In the event of a tie for first place, there will be a hole-by-hole sudden death play-off on a hole designated by the Committee to determine the Champion.

Other Divisions – All ties in each flight of the Senior and Super-Senior Field Divisions will be broken by the USGA score card match. The last 9 holes will be considered holes 10-18, the last 6 holes will be holes 13-18, the last 3 holes will be holes 16-18 and the last hole will be hole 18. In the case that players are still tied after the 18th hole, the winner will be determined by lot.

Field Divisions will pay gross first, then net.

Practice Rounds

Practice rounds are available after 11:00 AM two weeks prior to the Championship on a space available basis. Players may play a practice round at the rate of $35.00 + tax and includes a cart and range balls prior to the round. Please call 352-237-6644 to arrange your practice round. The proper place to practice your golf swing is on the driving range, hitting multiple shots on the course is unacceptable.

Defending Senior Champion

Sarah Phillips-Durst sat tied for 3rd after an opening round of 5-over-par 77. A change in the leader-board occurred after round two when Phillips-Durst overcame a three stroke deficit to steal first place and win her first FSGA Championship. Three birdies in her final round propelled Sarah to victory with a two day total of 150!

Defending Super-Senior Champion

In the Super-Senior Championship Division, Reggie Parker, of Hobe Sound, and no stranger to the winners circle, ran away with the lead after carding a round one 76, holding a seven-stroke lead going into the final round - the only player in her division to score in the 70s in Round One. She won her second FSGA Championship by seven strokes, with a tournament total of 157. Reggie also won the Women's Amateur in 2006.
