Pearce & Scamehorn Capture Senior Four-Ball

Cail Pearce and Bruce Scamehorn captured the Senior Four-Ball Championship winning on the second playoff hole at Lake Wales Country Club on October 16-17.  

Cail Pearce, of Lake Wales, and Bruce Scamehorn, of Winter Haven, partnered to win their first Senior Four-Ball Championship. After a first round 69, the pair trailed the leaders by three strokes. In the final round, Pearce and Scamehorn fired a 68 to force a playoff with Bob Ethridge and Rick Woulfe. In the playoff, both teams made par on the 18th hole to continue on to extra holes. Playing the par 4, 1st hole, Scamehorn drained a 20 foot birdie putt for the win. The Champions grew up playing at Lake Wales and have more than 80 years combined experience playing the course. This win is Scamehorn’s sixth Florida State Championship title as he has won the 1992 Mid-Senior, 1993 Mid-Amateur, 1995 Match Play, 2002 Parent-Child and 2004 Senior Amateur Championship.  

Ethridge, of Plantation, and Woulfe, of Fort Lauderdale, fired a 65 in the final round, the low round of the Championship, to push the Championship to extra holes. The 2005 Champions shot a 72 in the first round to finish at 137. David Boesel, of Winter Park, and Kim Schwencke, of Temple Terrace, tied for third place with Jim Whittemore, of Temple Terrace, and Kent Whittemore, of St. Petersburg, after each team recorded a 67-71—138. In the Senior Division First Flight, Brian Doyle, of Durham, and Scott Hatch, of Estero, shared the top spot with Felix Bertucci, of Gulfport, and Curtis Madson, of Mount Dora, each shooting a tournament total of 140. Doyle and Hatch shot a 73-67 as Bertucci and Madson carded a 74-66.  

In the Super Senior division, Jim DuBois and Bob Rogoff posted a tournament total of 6-under par 138 to edge out the field by one stroke. The pair from Coral Gables had a one stroke lead after shooting a 68 in the first round. In the final round, DuBois and Rogoff claimed the title on the final hole making a 6-foot putt for the win. Earlier this season, DuBois won the Super Senior division of the Senior Amateur Match Play Championship. The Tampa team of Rick Brown and Phil Leckey placed second one stroke shy of the leaders. Brown and Leckey recorded a 71 in the first round and moved into second place with a final round 68. Larre Barrett, of Homosassa, and Robert Martin, of Ft. Lauderdale, took third place with scores of 69-71.

Lake Wales Country Club was built in 1926 and designed by Donald Ross featuring a lot of elevation changes and rows of live oaks and palms.

ELIGIBILITY

Must be age 55 or older as of October 16, 2007, and both entrants must be members of the FSGA.

ENTRY FEE

$320 ($340 - members who do not have an active FSGA/GHIN Handicap).

CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT

36 holes of four-ball stroke play.

FLIGHTS

After 18 holes. The number of flights in each age division will be based on the number of teams and/or the range of scores.

DIVISIONS

55-64 (Senior), 65 and over (Super-Senior). All teams will compete in the age division commensurate with the youngest player’s age as of the first day of the Championship.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS

The Ocala team of Randy Briggs and Berger Warner posted a pair of 66's to win the title at The Club at TwinEagles.
