Alexander, Jensen Win University of Florida FJT

Tyson Alexander fired a final round 7-under par 63 to come from behind and win the boys 16-18 age division as Evan Jensen won the girls 16-18 age division wire-to-wire in the 54-hole Florida Junior Tour (FJT) event at the University of Florida Golf Course in Gainesville on May 27-29.

Tyson Alexander posted a tournament total of 5-under par 205 on his home course to win the division by one stroke. Alexander, 17, from Gainesville, shot a 69-73 in the first two rounds to trail the leaders by three strokes. In the final round, Alexander came out and birdied the first three holes for a total of eight birdies to blast a 63, the low round of the tournament. Alexander, who will play for the University of Florida in the fall, shot 31-32 in the final round for his first FJT victory. Blayne Barber, co-leader after two rounds of 67-72, finished in second place with a final round of 67. Barber, 16, from Lake City, posted a tournament total of 206 for his third second place finish this season. Wesley Graham, 16, from Port Orange, the two-time Boys Junior Champion of the 13-15 age division, took third place with a tournament total of 211. Graham shot a 72-67 to share the lead going into the final round and then posted a final round 72 to finish six strokes back from the Champion. This is Graham’s fifth top five finish this season including two wins at Rio Pinar and Disney. The boys division of 63 juniors played from approximately 6,701 yards, the same yardage the University of Florida men’s golf team plays in tournaments.

In the girls division, Evan Jensen, 16, from Belleair, clinched the title with a putt on the 18th hole to edge out the field by one stroke. Jensen maintained a lead after each round posting scores of 70-76-75—221 to win her second title of the season. Jensen’s first round of 70 was the low round of the girls for the tournament. Jensen, last season’s Girls 13-15 Player-of-the-Year, won earlier this season at PGA Golf Club. Megan McChrystal, 18, from Stuart, jumped into second place with a final round score of 73. McChrystal, coming off a win at Rio Pinar in March, shot rounds of 72-77 to finish one back from Jensen. Alexis Thompson, 11, of Coral Springs, tied her best finish in the older age division placing third with a tournament total of 225. Thompson, who has five FJT victories including the overall in the 54-hole Disney event last November, recorded rounds of 71-76-78. The 21 girls played the approximate distance the women’s golf team plays of 5,865 yards.
