Things to Know: Women’s Amateur

June 8, 2022

TAMPA, Fla. –  The 93rd Women’s Amateur Championship is set to begin on Wednesday at Streamsong Resort. The top amateurs from around the state will make their way to Streamsong to battle it out for the title.

Here are five things to know before the championship begins.

By The Numbers

The average age of this year’s Women’s Amateur field is 21.9 years old. Honorine Nobuta Ferry will be the youngest competitor in the field at 12 years old, while four-time Women’s Amateur champion Taffy Brower will be the most experienced player in the field at 78 years old.

Course Rating/Slope Rating for championship week is 75.3/130 for Blue course and 74.9/132 for Red course. For everyday players, women’s rating range from 68.6/124 to 78.1/ 141. This means a scratch female golfer with a 0.0 Handicap Index would be expected to shoot 75 on a good day.

College Standouts

Year after year, the Women’s Amateur draws some of the best college players from the state of Florida, with the last eight out of the nine champions being college players. This year is no different, with 54 collegiate players competing.

Thirty-nine colleges will be represented at this year’s championship. University of North Florida, University of South Florida, Stetson University and Florida International University will have three team members competing in this year’s championship.

Young, Scrappy and Hungry

The juniors will be out in full force, with 72 junior golfers in the field. Two-time Girls’ Junior champion, Kaitlyn Schroeder will look to add another FSGA title. Karoline Tuttle, a two-time FSGA Player of the Year, looks to get the job done this year after advancing to the Quarterfinals last year and finishing runner-up at the 2018 championship. Bailey Shoemaker, who will be in the field, made the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open Championship last month, finishing inside the top 50.

Past Champion Back for More

Kendall Griffin will look to defend her title this year after capturing the 2021 title, after defeating took down Elle Nachmann, 2 and 1, in the championship match at Hammock Dunes Club. Griffin will look to become the 10th player to capture back-to-back Women’s Amateur titles and the first since Emily Rymer did it in 2015.

Streamsong Plays Host

While the resort will host its first Women’s Amateur Championship in June, Streamsong is no stranger to hosting state and national championships, having previously hosted eight FSGA championships, most recently hosting the 2021 Amateur Championship.

The Blue course will serve as the primary course for the championship, while the Red course will be the companion course. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw designed the Red, while Tom Doak designed the Blue. However, they were given the same property to work with, so the two courses weave between one another throughout the 18 holes.
