Women's Mid-Amateur Championship

Heritage Oaks Golf & Country Club, Sarasota, FL

August 18-20, 2023

SARASOTA, Fla. - The 2023 Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship saw 21 players tee off on Friday, three of which were past Florida Mid-Am champions, and five players past US Women’s Mid-Amateur qualifiers.

Championship Division

Heritage Oaks Golf & Country Club is no stranger to hosting top FSGA championships. The 2021 host site for the Florida Women’s Open & Senior Open was primed and ready to test the players. With hardly a blade of grass out of place, narrow fairways and passing storms proved to be a challenge for even the best players.

Meghan Stasi started her championship with an opening round 2-over par, 73. This would give Stasi a one shot lead over defending champion Ashley Zagers, as well as, Brooke Raney and Ailsa Clark. The trio shot an opening round 74. Stasi’s round was highlighted by a birdie on the 14th hole and a closing birdie on the difficult 18th after making a 20-foot putt to close out her day.

Round two greeted players with hot and muggy conditions. With a slow start to her day, Stasi was 2-over par after her first seven holes, however, this quickly changed with three birdies coming in and one additional bogey. Stasi would card an even par round of 71, which was the low round for the tournament. Zagers remained steady, hanging close to the lead throughout her day. With consistent nines of 36-36, Zagers carded a 1-over par, 72 for her second round. While losing one additional shot to the lead, Zagers was far from out of contention and had her sights set on defending her title. Notable rounds from day two also included Ailsa Clark, Sokhary Pavese, and Kim Benedict who all shot a respectable 3-over par, 74.

The final round began at 8:30am with winds kicking up shortly after. With consistent wind speeds of 10-15 mph, Heritage Oaks showed players just how difficult it could play. Battling the conditions, Stasi and Zagers were back-and-forth all day long sharing the lead and trading places for the lead. With both players tied through the 17th hole, a playoff seemed likely, but after a spectacular approach shot into the 18th green, Zagers two putt par was enough to take a one shot lead and defend her title as the Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion.

At the end of the competition, the three past champions in the field (Zagers, Stasi, and Benedict) all finished in the top three for this year’s event.

Middle Division

The Middle Division started their championship on Saturday for a thirty-six hole event. Off to an early lead for the championship was Chris Martin. Martin started her event with an opening round 78, which gave her a five shot lead heading into the final day. Jill Spence and Ashley Nelson concluded their opening round with a 12-over par 83 to sit tied for second place.

Also battling the winds in day two, the Middle Division saw many changes on the leaderboard. Spence played consistently throughout the day and carded a second round 78, which was the low round for the day and vaulted her to a three shot victory over Nelson.

Forward Division

The Forward Division also kicked off their championship on Saturday along with the Middle Division. Bonnie Blanchard’s opening round of 86 would be the low round of the event for the forward division. Her rounds were highlighted by a birdie on day one on the 14th hole, and a birdie on 17 during day two.

Lurking close behind Blanchard was Nancy Suto. With an opening round 90, she sat only four shots off the lead heading into day two. Blanchard took control quickly in the final round and ultimately clamed an 11-shot victory. Suto maintained her position in second place, and with rounds of 95-93—188, Beth Pajak rounded out the top three.

Promoting Women's Golf - Discounted Entry Fee - In an effort to attract younger women back to competitive golf, the FSGA is reducing the entry fee for this event for women between the ages of 22 and 29 years old as of the first day of the competition. Women's mid-amateur golf faces a crisis and declining levels of participation. Reduced participation by women who leave the game after college also results in fewer future junior players being introduced to the game by their families. The FSGA is dedicated to making every possible effort to provide competitive golf that is accessible to women of all ages, including the early mid-amateurs who often face the most obstacles related to time and finances. The full entry price to this event for women over 29 is the SAME as in prior years and we hope all players will support this initiative to promote golf to all women. Please join us in spreading the word so that more women will join us at the championship and return to playing competitive golf on a regular basis.

Divisions & Course Set-Up

Players must select their division at the time of entry. A player may not switch divisions once pairings are posted.

  • Championship Division - 5,800-6,000 yards (Gross Only)
  • Middle Division - 5,300- 5,500 yards (Gross & Net)
  • Forward Division - 4,800-5,000 yards (Gross & Net)

Suggested Handicap Guidelines

The following should be considered when selecting divisions

  • Championship Division - 10.0 & Under
  • Middle Division - 11.0-18.0
  • Forward Division - 19.0 & Over

Committee Discretion: The Championship Committee reserves the right to move any player out of the Forward Division if their handicap is significantly lower than the majority of the competitors in that division, and their scoring history does not reflect the need to play from the Forward Division yardage.

Handicap Requirements

  • All valid Florida GHIN Handicap Indexes used will be from 7 days prior to the championship start date
  • Each player must have a valid Florida GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 34.0
  • Players in the Middle & Forward Divisions will play to 95% of their course handicap

Flighting

The Championship Division is gross only and will not be flighted.

The Middle & Forward Divisions will be pre-flighted based on individual handicaps.

Generally, divisions of more than 14 individuals will be flighted, however the Committee reserves the right to flight based on the number of individuals and/or the range of individual handicaps or scores.

Breaking Ties

Championship Division – The overall Champion will be the player with the lowest total score.  In the event of a tie for first place, there will be a hole-by-hole sudden death playoff on a hole designated by the Committee to determine the Champions.

Other Divisions – All ties in each flight of the Middle and Forward Division will be broken by the USGA scorecard match. The last 9 holes will be considered holes 10-18, the last 6 holes will be holes 13-18, the last 3 holes will be holes 16-18 and the last hole will be hole 18. In the case that players are still tied after the 18th hole, the winner will be determined by lot.

Middle and Forward Divisions will pay gross first, then net.

Practice Rounds

Practice rounds are available one week prior to the championship and after 12:00 PM the weekend prior on a space available basis. The price for a practice round is $35.00 + tax and includes cart and range balls prior to the round. Please call 941-926-7600 to arrange your practice round. The proper place to practice your golf swing is on the driving range, hitting multiple shots on the course is unacceptable.

Defending Mid-Amateur Champion

Ashley Zagers birdied two holes late to take home the victory at the Women's Mid-Amateur Championship. The Oldsmar native began the final round in a tie for the lead with Kelli Pry and 2021 Champion, Kim Benedict at 1-under. Benedict took the outright lead with a birdie on the third, but Zagers answered with a birdie on the fifth to take back a share of the lead at 2-under. Zagers rolled in back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to take the outright lead, which she held on to capture the victory with 3-under total score 213.
