Jones & Romeo Take Mixed Team Title

Jimmy Jones Sr. & Terese Romeo fired a tournament total of 15-under par to claim the Mixed Team Championship at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, on June 28-29.

Jones and Romeo, both from Tampa, got off to a great start on Saturday, opening up the Championship with a round of seven-under par 65 on the Ranch Course. The duo would take only a one stroke lead into the final round which would be held on the famed Quarry Course. Jones and Romeo would pick up where they left off firing an impressive round of eight-under par 64, to secure the title by four shot. For the tournament Jones and Romeo went bogey free to go along with their 15 birdies. This is Jones second State Championship of the 2014 season, after capturing the Mid-Amateur Four-Ball South Championship earlier in the summer.  Ben and Charlotte Daughan, of Orlando, took home second place honors after rounds of 67-66 for a tournament total of 133.

In the Forward Division, Chris Berens, of Mount Dora, and Carol Kilian, of Daytona Beach, broke away from the field to capture the title. After posting a first round of four-under par 68, the pair would find themselves in a three way tie entering the final round. Berens and Kilian put together another solid round on Sunday posting a one-under par 71 on the Quarry course, to win by five shots. The teams of Bret and Debbie Mook Sang, of Valrico and Chris and Deidre Edgerton of Port Saint Lucie, finished tied for second place with a tournament total of even par 144.

The shot of the tournament came in Saturday's round when Jeremy Perna, of Sarasota, made a Hole-in-One on the par-3 17th hole on the Ranch course.

Championship Format

• 96 players; 48 teams max
• 36 holes of four-ball stroke play
• Both gross and net competitions are played concurrently
• Awards and gift certificates are awarded in both divisions with gross scores receiving priority

Eligibility

• At least one entrant of each team must be a member of the FSGA
• Both players must have a valid USGA GHIN Handicap.

Entry Fee

• $300 per team
• Entry fee includes awards luncheon after play on Sunday

Late entries will be accepted subject to a $10 late entry fee should the entrant gain acceptance into the field

Championship Divisions

Teams may select to play in either the Championship Division or the Forward Division.  There is NO yardage mix allowed between divisions.

Course Set-Up

• Championship Division: Men - 6,500 yards/Women - 5,700 yards (Gross & Net)
• Forward Division: Men - 6,200 yards/Women - 5,200 yards (Gross & Net)

Tee Times

• Round One - 7:30 AM tee times off #1 & #10 on the Ranch Course
• Round Two - 8:30 AM Shotgun on the Quarry Course

Handicaps

The tournament will use the USGA's recommendation of:

• Men receive 90% of their course handicap
• Women receive 95% of their course handicap
• If there is a difference of more than eight strokes between the two members of a team, an additional 10% reduction will be applied to the course handicap of each member of the side.

Tie Breaking Procedures

There will be a hole by hole playoff to determine the Champion only. All other places to determine gift certificates will be decided by the following tie break method:

• The best score for the last 18 holes
• The best score for the last 9 holes
• The best score for the last 6 holes
• The best score for the last 3 holes
• The best score for the 18th hole
• By lot

For purposes of a tie break, the last 9 holes will be considered holes 10-18, the last 6 holes will be holes 13-18, the last 3 holes will be holes 16-18 and the last hole will be hole 18.

Practice Rounds

Practice rounds are available one week prior to the championship.  Practice rounds may be played after 12:00 PM on the weekends. The price for a practice round is $35.00 + tax. Please call (352) 746-3446 to arrange your practice round. The proper place to practice your golf swing is on the driving range, hitting multiple shots on the course is unacceptable.

Also, the Championship Committee is permitting practice on any competition course or part of any course on any day of or between rounds of the Championship. As a result, competitors are allowed to play a practice round on the course remaining to be played after the first round. 

Carts

Carts are included for all competitive rounds.  Players are responsible for practice round fees.

Defending Champions

McCabe Buege and Monifa Sealy claimed the Mixed Team Championship at Amelia Island Plantation in Amelia Island, FL on June 29-30.  Saturday’s round was played on the par 72 Oak Marsh Course, and Sunday’s round was played on the par 70 Ocean Links Course.
