Wegmann Wins Mid-Senior Championship

Peter Wegmann posted a tournament total of 6-under par 209 to capture the Mid-Senior Championship at Grand Harbor Golf and Beach Club in Vero Beach on August 15-17.

Peter Wegmann, from Fort Lauderdale, shot a final round 1-under par 71 on the River Course to win the 2008 Championship by two strokes. After a first round 2-under par 69 on the par 71 Harbor Course, Wegmann trailed the leader by three strokes. Wegmann then matched his first round score of 69 in the second round on the River Course to take the lead by one with one round remaining. In the final round, Wegmann posted a 37 on the front nine with all pars and one bogey. On the back, Wegmann started strong with consecutive birdies on holes 10 and 11. Heading to 17, Wegmann and Dennis Brady were tied for the lead at 5-under for the Championship. Playing the par 5, 17th hole, Wegmann hit his second shot 15 feet from the hole to two-putt for birdie and seal the victory.

Three players finished two strokes back from Wegmann to share second place honors including defending champion Rick Woulfe, Fort Lauderdale. Woulfe shot a 73 in the first round and moved ahead with rounds of 68-70 on the River Course. Also at 211, Tim Hume, from Tampa, carded rounds of 71-71-69 and Peter Hammar, from Orlando, recorded a 69-70-72. Brady, from Melbourne, fell into a tie for fifth place with Sam Martinez, from Miami. Martinez, a two-time 40-54 Winter Series Points Champion, shot a 69-70-73 for the three rounds.

The River Course, created by Joe Lee, sits along the Indian River while the Pete Dye designed Harbor Course is reminiscent of historic Scottish links.

ELIGIBILITY:  Must be age 40 or older as of August 15, 2008, and be a member of the FSGA.

ENTRY FEE:  $190 ($200 - members who do not have an active FSGA/GHIN Handicap).

CHAMPIONSHIP:  Fifty-four holes of individual stroke play. All players play eighteen holes each on the Harbor Course and the River Course on Friday, August 15th and Saturday, August 16th. The field will be cut to the low seventy and ties after thirty-six holes. The final eighteen holes will be played on the River Course. The lowest score for 54 holes will be the Champion. There will be a hole by hole play-off immediately following play in event of a tie for the Champion. It is the player’s responsibility to be present for any playoff.

COURSE:  Harbor and River on Friday and Saturday, River on Sunday.

CARTS:  Carts are included for all competitive rounds. Players are responsible for practice round fees.

SPECTATORS AND CADDIES: Spectators and caddies are always welcome at FSGA Championships. Only players are allowed to ride in carts.  If a player employs a caddie, the caddie MUST walk and the player’s clubs must remain on the golf cart.

COURSE SET-UP:  The golf course will be set-up approximately 6600 - 6800 yards.

REGISTRATION TABLE: There will be a registration table set up in front of the pro shop. All contestants are requested to check in.

PRACTICE ROUND: Practice rounds are available one week prior to the championship.  Practice rounds may be played after 12:00 PM on the weekend.  The price for your practice round is $30.00 + tax.  Please call (772) 778-9200 to arrange your practice round.  The proper place to practice your golf swing is on the driving range, hitting multiple shots on the course is unacceptable.

PAYMENT:  Grand Harbor Golf & Beach Club will accept cash ONLY for method of payment.

DIRECTIONS TO GRAND HARBOR GOLF & BEACH CLUB:

From West Palm Beach: Take I-95 north to SR 60 (exit 147).  Take SR 60 east to Indian River Blvd. and turn North (left); follow Indian River Blvd. approximately 3.5 miles to the Grand Harbor entrance.

From Orlando:  Take the Beeline Expressway (528) east toward Cocoa Beach.  Take I-95 South to SR 60 (exit 147). Take SR 60 east to Indian River Blvd. and turn North (left); follow Indian River Blvd. approximately 3.5 miles to the Grand Harbor entrance.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS:  Rick Woulfe, of Fort Lauderdale, won the title at Amelia Island Plantation with rounds of 70-70-75--215.
