Senior Four-Ball Championship

Buckhorn Springs Golf & Country Club - Valrico

September 26-27, 2017

The great course conditions of Buckhorn Springs Golf and Country Club made it seem as if a hurricane had never passed through the state of Florida two weeks prior. From fairway to green the players appreciated wonderful conditions leading to low scores and wire-to-wire Champions!

Jimmy Jones and Gordon Marshall combined two impressive rounds to seal a victory in the Senior Division. The duo of Jones and Marshall, who won the Senior Four-Ball in 2014 with partner Rick Woulfe, posted a round one 65 (-7) to take the early lead by one stroke over the team of Richard Kerper and Mike Walters. Holding strong to their first place lead, Jones and Marshall finished the front nine at three under-par, identical to round one, on the final day. Marshall, of Sarasota, birdied holes 11 and 15 while Jones, of Tampa, birdied the 14th hole to card a final round 66 (-6).  Kerper, of Oldsmar, and Walters, of Tampa, followed up their round one 66 with a 68 to remain in second place for the Championship. The team finished three strokes behind the team total of 131 (-13) posted by Jones and Marshall. Rounding out the top three with two consistent rounds of 68 for an eight under-par total of 136 was the team of Chip Peterson and Edward Parnell. Defending Champions, Michael Cox and Jacques Legere, finished tied for fourth place with rounds of 68-69—137 (-7).

The Super-Senior division saw another wire-to-wire win for the team of Robert Cunningham and Ronald Cornette. After round one, Cunningham and Cornette tied the team of Robert Lundquist and Jerry Young for first place with a six under-par 66. Lundquist was crowned victorious last year with teammate Kim Schwencke. Both teams continued to battle closely in the second round, remaining tied after the front-nine. Cunningham, of Saint Cloud, and Cornette, of Kissimmee, fought hard coming down the home stretch and with three birdies on holes 16, 17, and 18 broke the tie and claimed the win! A second round 70 gave Cornette and Cunningham a one stroke victory with a 136 (-8) total. Steve Earsley, who won the Senior division in 2012 and the Super-Senior division in 2014, teamed with Don Russell to advance from fourth to second place with rounds of 69-68—137. Due to a second round 72, Lundquist and Young finished tied for third with the team of Bob Levy and Robert Hess at 138 (-6).
