Schneider Claims Women’s Stroke Play Title
Ericka Schneider wins the 2012 Women’s Stroke Play Championship firing a tournament total of 4-under par 212 at the Ritz Carlton in Orlando, on July 6-8.
Ericka Schneider, of Bradenton, prevailed over the field of 67 players to capture the 2012 Women’s Stroke Play Championship. In the first round, Schneider grabbed the lead after her impressive four-under par 68, and followed up with a second round two-under par 70 extending her lead by three heading into the final round.
In the final round, Schneider’s lead narrowed after two bogeys placing her only one-stroke ahead of Kristine Odaiyar, of Ocala. She quickly regained her two-stroke lead by birding thirteen finishing her at two-over par for the day, and scoring her the title. Ericka Schneider will be a senior at Ole Miss this fall.
Kristine Odaiyar and Dylan Kim, of Winter Garden, tied for second with a tournament total of two-under par 214. Odaiyar, the 2011 Junior Match Play champion, was the model of consistency throughout the week shooting a two-under par during round one and an even 72 the second and third day. Kim was even after round one and then came from behind and fired a three-under par 69 to take second place in round two. Kim had two birdies and three bogeys placing her at one-over for the day and two strokes behind Schneider.
The 20 women in the Field Divisions battled tough water hazards and demanding greens this weekend in Orlando. Cristy Vandenberg, of Jupiter, held on to her lead all three rounds and captured the Field Division First Flight with a tournament total of 237. Kolby McWilliams, of Tallahassee, claimed the Field Division Second Flight with rounds of 84-87-82, scoring her a tournament total of 253.
The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club design, by two-time British Open Champion Greg Norman, has provided a challenging but fair test of the women’s abilities this weekend in Orlando. The Championship consists of 54-holes of stroke play with flights being determined after 36 holes. The Field Division players were pre-flighted based upon handicap index. Full Story
