Ponte Vedra Inn & Club Wins Club Team Championship

The Florida State Club Team Championship finished today just like it did 62 years ago. Ponte Vedra Inn & Club prevailed as the winner of the 2003 Florida State Club Team Championship just as another Ponte Vedra team did in the inaugural event in 1941.

Held at the renowned King & Bear and Slammer & Squire courses at the World Golf Village, the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club team of Steve Horner, Scot Regner, Worth Calfee and Ken Moody scored a two-day total of 427. Going into the second day in second place with a 215 in the first round, Ponte Vedra finished the second round with a total of 212, four under par. Steve Horner shot a three under par 69 to lead the Ponte Vedra team. As a team, Horner says, “ We were very relaxed and confident because we knew the skills levels of each other.”

Tied for second, The Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes and the Redlands Golf and Country Club finished eleven strokes behind the leader with a 438. Defending Champions, Interlachen Country Club finished tied for 11th with three other clubs with a two-day total of 449. Going into the second day, TPC at Sawgrass was leading the field and finished in fourth with a two-day total of 440.

The Club Team Championship consisted of 41 teams from across the state representing their golf club. Teams of four played 36 holes of stroke play, 18 holes each at Slammer & Squire and King & Bear. The total of the low three of the four gross scores counted after each round. The Club Team Championship is the third championship on the Florida State Golf Association’s competitions schedule.

The Slammer & Squire is named for its legendary course consultants, Sam Snead and Gene Sarazen. The course meanders naturally through native flatwoods and hardwood hammocks, and bordering wetland preserves and wildlife habitat. For the first time in history, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus paired to create the King & Bear. These two golfing legends collaborated on a truly remarkable golf course of unparalleled beauty, challenge and design. The signature feature of the course is placid lakes edged with large coquina rock.
