South Captures Fifth-Straight Women’s FL Cup


NAPLES, Fla. – The Women’s Florida Cup will stay in the South for another year, as the South captured its fifth-straight victory. South Florida was victorious during the two-day championship, raising the cup with a 18.5-13.5 victory on Tuesday at Quail West Golf & Country Club.

It was the South’s fifth Women’s Florida Cup victory. This year’s five-point margin of victory is closest Florida Cup result in the championship’s 10-year history.

Four-Ball Matches

The championship began on Monday morning with eight four-ball matches. Both came out strong, with the South team taking 4.5 points and the North earning 3.5 points.

Mary Jane Hiestand and Carolina Hart birdied the final hole to capture a 1-up victory for the South over Susan Keane and Liliana Ruiz-Munoz. Susan Cohn and Sherry Herman won three of six holes on Nos. 13-18, capturing a 3-and-2 win for the South over Tama Caldabaugh and Carolyn Creekmore.

Elise Gordon and Kerstin Koenig took the biggest win of the morning for the South, defeating Christine Martin and Prudence Hornberger, 4 and 3. Kelli Pry and Kaylin Crownover earned the first point for the North, taking down Kim Benedict and Marie Arnoux, 1 up. North’s Sarah Matin and Dree Fausnaugh won back-to-back holes to start the match and never let the lead go, defeating Vanessa Vela and Wendi Christensen, 2 and 1. 

Foursomes Matches

Monday afternoon’s foursome matches saw another close session. South’s Kim Keyer-Scott and Hart earned a decisive 5-and-4, winning the last three holes. Koenig and Nancy Bradley also earned a big win for the South, taking down Melanie Clegg and Prudence Hornberger.

On the North side, Kiely Allen and Ruiz-Munoz won 2 and 1, while Susan Keane and Jodi Sullivan also earned a point for the North with a 2-and-1 win.

After grabbing 4.5 points in the afternoon, the South headed into Tuesday’s final round with a 9-7 lead over the North, needing 7.5 points to retain the Women’s Florida Cup.

Singles Matches

Both teams captured some dominating wins on Tuesday in the 16 singles matches. Adrienne MacLean put the first of the day on the board for the South, winning the first six holes and defeating Allen, 8 and 6. South’s Benedict and Cohn both earned 6-and-5 win against Sarah Matin and Creekmore, respectively. Hiestand also earned a big win for the South, defeating Jodi Sullivan, 6 and 4.

For the North team, Pry and Melissa Gotfredson both win 4 and 3 over Marie Arnoux and Bree Hartlage, respectively. Dree Fausnaugh won the first four holes of her match against Wendi Christensen and never gave up the lead, winning 5 and 4.

The South team picked up 9.5 points in the singles to take home the victory, while the North ended with 6.5. Four players finished the weekend undefeated Keyer-Scott, Hart, Gotfredson and Koenig.

2021 Women's Florida Cup Matches

Eligibility

Invitation only for female amateur members of the FSGA. The FSGA selects two sixteen player teams to represent the North and the South of Florida in this biannual competition. Each team’s selections includes: 

  • (4) Senior players with the highest point totals from the Women's Senior Two-Year Player of the Year Points List
  • (4) Players with the highest point totals from the Women's Two-Year Amateur Player of the Year Points List
  • (2) Net players from the past two year's Women's Net Championship - The winner, or highest finishing player from the "Middle" division (i.e. The highest finishing player from the "North" and from the "South" will be selected for their team)
  • (2) Senior players selected by the FSGA Championship Committee
  • (2) Players selected by the FSGA Championship Committee
  • (2) Net players selected by the FSGA Championship Committee and the Captains based upon participation and performance over the prior years

In the event that a selected player is not a member of the FSGA, they must become one to meet eligibility requirements. Any designated selections which are not filled due to ineligibility or other reason will be selected by the FSGA Championships Committee.

$200 includes:

  • Two team shirts, team hat and towel
  • Four rounds of golf
  • Lunch on Monday and Tuesday

 Format

  • Ryder Cup style format between the North Team and the South Team
  • Each match is worth one point to the team total
  • First team to 16 1/2 points wins the Cup for one year
  • A 16-16 tie results in the defending champions retaining the Cup for an additional two years.

  • Non-Senior Players - 5,800 yards approx. (Gross Only)
  • Senior Players - 5,400 yards approx. (Gross Only)
  • Net Players - 5,000 yards approx. (Net Only)

Handicaps

  • Net Players Only - All valid Florida GHIN Handicap Indexes used will be from 7 days prior to the championship start date.

Sunday, October 17th

  • Afternoon practice rounds starting at 12:00 PM
  • Welcome Reception at the Clubhouse

Monday, October 18th

  • 8:00 - 8:30 AM - Four-Ball matches off #1 and #10
  • 1:00 PM - Foursome matches off #1 and #10
  • Pairings Dinner at the Clubhouse

Tuesday, October 19th

  • 8:00 - 9:30 AM - Singles matches off #1
  • Awards Ceremony and lunch

Teams

16 members per team. Teams will be finalized in the days following the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship.

Each team consists of 6 amateurs, 6 senior golfers (no handicaps) and 4 net players. All players must be of age 21 and over as of October 18, 2021.

The FSGA Championships Committee/on-site Rules Committee reserves the right to alter any of the conditions, provisions and/or schedules. The decision of the Championships Committee/on-site Rules Committee in any matter will be final.

Defending Champions 

For the fourth-straight time, it was the South who raised the Women’s Florida Cup on Tuesday. South Florida was victorious during the two-day championship, retaining the cup with a 20-12 win at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club. It was the South’s fourth-straight Women’s Florida Cup Victory.
