West Orange CC (16-18)

West Orange Country Club - Winter Garden

February 21-22, 2015

Trace & Fausnaugh Victorious at West Orange

The Florida Junior Tour’s 16-18 division was back in full swing this weekend at West Orange Country Club in Winter Garden. Warm weather, as well as fairly light winds, allowed for some great scoring conditions out on the course. Both Travis Trace and Dree Fausnaugh were able to take advantage of the conditions and broke through to win their first event of the 2015 FJT season.

In the Boy’s division, Travis was able to put together rounds of 71 and 68 to give him a three stroke victory over Jacob Huizinga. Trace, of Jacksonville, started strong right out of the gate on Sunday as he birdied two of his first three holes of the day. After shooting a steady one under par 35 on the front nine, Trace went on to shoot an impressive 33, two under par on the back nine to coast to victory. Competitors Jacob Huizinga and Sachin Kumar would do their best to cut into Travis’ lead, but were unable to close the gap. Third place finisher, Kumar, would post a one under par 70 on the day to finish one behind Jacob Huizinga who posted a second round 73.

Dree Fausnaugh, the winner of the 2014 Junior Tour Championship at TPC Sawgrass, claimed another FJT title after firing a tournament total 152. Her extremely impressive first round 73 gave her enough of an advantage over the rest of the field to hold onto the lead after shooting a second round 79. Dree, of Orlando, had her ups and downs in the final round, including a triple bogey on the 18th hole, her ninth hole of the day, and two birdies on holes one and eleven. Finishing just one stroke off the lead, both Emma Albrecht and Morgan Baxendale battled extremely hard in an attempt to claim the come from behind victory. Emma had a tremendous turnaround on Sunday, shooting the low score of the day, 73, and narrowly missing a chance to force a playoff with Fausnaugh. Morgan, who shot a final round 77, unfortunately took a double bogey on her final hole of the tournament to finish tied for second place.

The FJT 16-18 age division’s next event will be at Amelia National Golf Club on March 7th and 8th. Best of luck to all the competitors in the coming weeks!
