LAKEWOOD RANCH - The final event of the 2018 Winter Series season came down to the final holes at Lakewood National Golf Club. Although the tournament was not played in typical 'winter conditions' the event marked an end to a very successful Winter Series season.

Lakewood National is a new facility that was built by the Arnold Palmer Design company, and features 36-holes of championship golf that is shaped through the natural preserves of Manatee County. For this final Winter Series event, 83 individuals from across the State came together to compete against each other and the golf course. Round one saw perfect golf conditions and low scores from the Senior and Super-Senior Divisions, while the Mid-Amateurs played a tight, hard fought battle for their champion.

In the Mid-Amateur division, Brian Polick, of Valrico, and John O'Brien, of Jacksonville, jumped out to the first round lead after scores of 74. Steve Dana, Miles McConnell and Chester VandenBerg were close on their heels with scores of 75 respectively. Round two saw slightly more challenging conditions, however Miles McConnell, of Tampa, carded two birdies and

two bogeys to shoot a final round 72 for a total of 147 and a two stroke victory. First round leaders Brian Polick and John O'Brien finished third and fourth, respectively.

The Mid-Amateur Points Champion, who is decided based on his points performance throughout the season (same for all divisions), is Paul Tesori. Tesori, of Ponte Vedra, did not play in the event at Lakewood National, but had won the previous event at ChampionsGate Country Club. His play throughout the 2018 season was good enough to land him at the top of the Mid-Amateur Points list, and automatically qualifies him for the 101st Amateur Championship, hosted by The Concession Golf Club in June.

David Tassell, of Jupiter, shot rounds of 74-76 to finish at six-over par for the event and tied for first place. His win did not come easy, as he needed to beat out first round leader Mike Corbin, of Weston, to claim his title. The two players went back to the first hole for a sudden death playoff, where Tassell ultimately won and secured his spot as the Points Champion for the Senior Division. This win marks David's third Winter Series win of the 2018 season. He previously won at Southern Hills Plantation Club, and Esplanade Golf & Country Club. With three wins in eight events, it is easy to see why David is our 2018 Winter Series Senior Points Champion! Tassell is now exempt to play in both the Mid-Amateur Championship at Coral Creek Club, and the Senior Amateur Championship at Mayacoo Lakes Country Club.

The Super-Senior Division saw the majority of red numbers at Lakewood National. Doug LaCrosse, of Tampa, beat out a very stout field, including Points Champion Bobby Lundquist to claim his first Winter Series victory of the year. LaCrosse had a very respectable season, finishing in the Top-5 in every event he played in. Bobby Lundquist, who finished second to LaCrosse, was this years Points Champion for the Super-Senior Division. Lundquist, of Sanford, closed out the 2018 Winter Series season with a win at ChampionsGate followed by a second-place finish at Lakewood National to secure his second consecutive Points Champion title. With his win, Lundquist is now exempt into the Senior Amateur Championship, to be held at Mayacoo Lakes Country Club.
