Buckhorn Springs Golf & Country Club - Valrico

January 19-20, 2015

Mcnair, Macy & Schwencke Victorious in Tampa

The Tampa Individual Winter Series finished on Tuesday, January 20 with wire-to-wire competition. Jay McNair and Kim Schwencke, both from Tampa, won their respective age division in a sudden death playoff and Kevin Macy, of Tampa, won the 55-64 age division with a solid final nine. Buckhorn Springs Golf and Country Club hosted the tournament and was in great course condition.

In the 40-54 Age Division, Douglas Jones, of Brandon, led the tournament after round one with a score of 77. One shot behind Jones, Jay Mcnair, Stevenson Clarke, and Ryan Mulhern tied for second place after Monday’s round. During round two, Clarke struggled and fell from the top of the leaderboard. Mulhern played solid with a round two score of 76 but could not catch Mcnair who shot a 75 and moved into first place. Jason Bell, of Syndey, made a charge from behind with a one over-par score of 73 and tied Mcnair for first. Bell and McNair headed to the tenth hole for a playoff to determine the champion. McNair tapped in for par after chipping to eighteen inches while Bell bogeyed. This is Mcnair’s first winter series victory.

In the 55-64 Age Division, Owen Joyner, of Bonita Springs, fired a low score of 71 to capture first place after round one. Kevin Macy finished the first round one shot back from Joyner after shooting even par. On Tuesday, Joyner faltered with a four over-par 76 and finished the tournament tied for second place with Lenny Barthle. Macy erased his one shot deficit by solid play on Tuesday. Going out in 37 strokes, Macy played his final nine holes even par and finished the day with a birdie. Macy’s consistent rounds led him to a first place finish, tournament total 145.

In the 65 & Over Age division, Kim Schwencke and Pete McDade tied after round two with a tournament total 149. Kim played his final ten holes one under-par to get into the playoff with McDade. On the third playoff hole, McDade three-putted giving Schwencke the win.  Pete Andrews, who finished round one in first place with a score of 73, fell to fourth place after a disappointing second round score.

The Winter Series events include seven competitions, six individual events and one four-ball event. There are three age divisions, Mid-Senior (40-54), Senior (55-64) and Super Senior (65 & over). The Winter Series is a great opportunity for golfers to compete in competitive events that normally may not because they do not live in Florida year round. The next Winter Series will be held February 2-3 at Lake Wales Country Club in Lake Wales.
