Williams & Whittemore capture Senior Four-Ball; Sponder & Rosenbaum capture Super-Senior Divsion



The Senior and Super-Senior divisions both finished round one with two teams tied for first, making for an exciting final round! In the Senior division the teams of Kelly Gosse/Mike Murphy and Pete Williams/Don Whittemore sat at the top with impressive rounds of 63 (-9). The teams of Steve Sponder/Marc Rosenbaum and Brian Sachs/Jim Carley tied for the lead in the Super-Senior division after two rounds of 66 (-6). 

The players started the final round at The Golf Club at South Hampton, located in St. Augustine, ready to crown two teams Champions. The teams of Whittemore/Williams and Gosse/Murphy remained tied through the first nine holes, making the turn at four under-par. Both Whittemore, of Temple Terrace, and Williams, of Juno Beach, birdied the 13th hole and Whittemore birdied the par five 17th hole to finish round two with a 66 (-6). Meanwhile Gosse, of Inverness, and Murphy, of Oldsmar, each birdied two holes on the back nine to finish tied with Whittemore/Williams. The two teams finished at 15 under-par, 129, and would meet again for a sudden-death playoff. The team of Don Whittemore and Pete Williams would secure their victory on the second playoff hole! Two teams, Bill Barnes/Terry Werner and Mike Riley/Jacques Legere, tied for third place with a two day total of 130 (-14).

In the Super-Senior division, the team of Rosenbaum/Sponder began the day on fire with a birdie from Rosenbaum, of Hollywood, on the first hole. Sponder, of Plantation, continued the birdie train making three more birdies on the front nine to turn at four under-par. Brain Sachs, of Newberry, was looking to win his second Senior Four-Ball Championship after earning a victory in 2002 with teammate John Darr. Sachs and Carley, of Ormond Beach, fell to even par on the front nine posting a par on each hole. On the final nine holes Carley scored two birdies but with one bogey the duo finished tied for ninth at 137 (-7). Marc Rosenbaum and Steve Sponder hoisted the trophy after earning a three stroke win with a 131 (-13) total. Bobby Lundquist and Jerry Young captured second place with consistent rounds of 67 for a 134 (-10) total.

The Senior Four-Ball is a perfect opportunity for a golfing road trip with a buddy to The Golf Club at South Hampton, in St. Augustine. Two days of four-ball, flighted after day one, makes for an enjoyable and competitive golfing environment. The Championship has two divisions: Senior and Super-Senior. To play in the Super-Senior Division, both players need to be 65 years old as of the first day of the Championship. Click here to see the results from 2017. 

Championship Format

  • 36 holes of four-ball stroke play (gross)

What is a Four-Ball? - A four-ball is a two person team where the low score of the two players on each hole is counted. It is commonly referred to as a best-ball.

Championship Field Size

Maximum of 52 teams - 104 players

Eligibility

  • Male amateur golfers
  • At least 55 years of age as of the first day of the Championship
  • Both entrants are required to be members of the FSGA

Entry Fee

  • $320 per team GHIN Members or Foundation Member
  • $340 per team Non-GHIN Members

Late entries will be accepted subject to a $10 late entry fee should the entrant gain acceptance into the field

Entry Priority

Entries will be accepted based upon the order of receipt. Entries received after the competitive field is full or after the close of entries, will be placed on an alternates list. Alternates will be contacted in the order of receipt of entry, if and when, a spot becomes available.

Tuesday, September 25th

  • 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM - Round 1 tee times off 1st & 10th tees

Wednesday, September 26th

  • 8:30 AM - Round 2 shotgun start
  • Lunch & Awards immediately following

Divisions

  • 55-64 - Senior Age Division
  • 65 & Over - Super-Senior Age Division
  • All teams will compete in the age division commensurate with the youngest player's age as of the first day of the Championship.

Course Set-Up

The golf course will be set-up at approximately

  • 6,400-6,500 yards - Senior
  • 6,100-6,200 yards - Super Senior

Practice Rounds

Practice rounds are available one week prior to the Championship and restricted to after 12:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. The price for a practice round is $30.00 + tax. Please call 904-287-7529 to arrange your practice round. The proper place to practice your golf swing is on the driving range, hitting multiple shots on the course is unacceptable.

Defending Champions

Jimmy Jones & Gordon Marshall posted rounds of 65-66--131 (-13) to capture the Senior Division by three strokes, while in the Super-Senior Division, Robert Cunningham and Ronald Cornette squeezed out a one stroke victory over the team of Steve Earsley and Don Russell posting 66-70--136 (-8) at Buckhorn Springs Golf & Country Club in Valrico.

Carts

Carts are included for all competitive rounds. Players are responsible for practice round fees.

Scorecards

Only one of the partners per team need sign the score card and each score to count must be individually identifiable.  See Rule 31-3.
